Multicultural Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan Title: How Do You Say Hello?

Grade Level: 3RD Grade

Concept / Topic To Teach:

Social Studies (This activity is tied in with multicultural integration

in the classroom)

General Goal(s):

Students will become familiar with the culture and customs

associated with other cultures

Specific Objectives:

Students will be able to say the language associated with this

topic: flag, design, primary language, and secondary language. Students

will able to appreciate linguistic diversity and learn a greeting in the

language Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic.

Required Materials:

One computer every three children, Internet access, atlas

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):

Teacher will ask the students if anyone in the classroom speaks

Spanish, Japanese or Arabic. Ask if anyone in the class speaks Spanish,

Japanese, or Arabic. If at least one does, that child is the expert for this

lesson.

Step-By-Step Procedures:

After the helper students are selected, ask the students to locate

the countries in which Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic are spoken by

using the atlas. For Spanish, I will direct children to Spain, Mexico, and

countries in Central and South America such as Guatemala, Bolivia, and

Peru (among others); for Japanese, direct them to Japan; and for Arabic,

direct them to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, and Iraq.

I will ask the students to visit a website with foreign language

information for travelers. Many websites with information for travelers

will have a language translator or a list of basic words in English and the

foreign language.

My students will find the word Hello. In Spanish, for example, find

"Hola." They will need to play a sound file in order to know how to

pronounce the word: once so the can listen, and a second time so they

can repeat it. Some children may want to perfect their pronunciation, so

replay the sound file as many times as they want.

I will write the foreign words on the blackboard, and students will

repeat the word in the three languages as many times as they need.
Using the website I will ask my students to look for the customs of one

country (the one the want) in which the selected languages are spoken.

Students will discuss the design of flag, and copy the flag for a display.

Plan For Independent Practice:

Using the translator students will practice how to pronounce the

word in the different languages. They will brainstorm any idea they have

about the selected languages.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):

I will remind the students how to say the word Hello in the

three different languages, and select one country where the selected

languages are spoken to explain how I would to be their reports for the

assessment.

Assessment Based On Objectives:

Students will write a report in which they select one country in

which Spanish, Arabic or Japanese is spoken describing the

characteristics of the country, the flag, the people, and all the

information they want to include.

Possible Connections To Other Subjects:

This lesson could be related to cultural diversity. I could display in

the smart board images of different countries, and different ways of

livings.
