Dinghy Dock
Opens at

Fishermans Village
A long awaited dinghy dock allows Boater
Access to MdRs main tourist area

O
h Halleluiah, the day has finally comeFishermans Village officially has a dinghy dock for local boaters to come, dock and
enjoy the restaurants and shops the little tourist pocket has to offer. For years and years, the boating community has privately
and publicly bemoaned the fact that there were zero dinghy docks in the countrys largest man made marina. Other marinas
have them as a matter of course but here in Los Angeles, with seaside restaurants all around, there were none. Then, when
Killer Shrimp replaced Marina Harbor Restaurant in E basin a few years back, they set up a dinghy dock and there was
one. Somehow, one was almost worse then none because it begged the question, why cant we have these things all over?
Baby steps

Alas, it has just been announced that there is now 150-feet of dock space reserved expressly for Marina del Rey boaters in what was once the old
fuel dock. The marina-facing side of the dock is reserved for charter companies who will share the space, but the side thats nearest the seawall is for
dinghys under 12-feet. Will some grumble that 14-feet is a better size limitation as it is at Catalina Island? Yes, but let us count our blessings and
remember that it was years ago that Fishermans Village owner Michale Pachie announced on record that docks would be part of the seascape sooner
than later.

We are going to implement dinghy docks within the next 45-90 days, maximum, said Michael Pichaie in 2014. It will be done. Its something thats
been recommended by many peopleits absolutely necessary and we are going to do that.

Well, that didnt happen but let us not dwell in the negativethe fact is, El Torito margaritas or weekend live music or vanilla ice cream cones are now
a short dinghy ride away. The doors are open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. so make sure to gobble down that last fajita before 11. Theres also a four-hour limit
but sheriffs arent looking to enforce rules like that unless its depriving others from an opportunity.

Authorities are requesting that dinghy skippers do park on the sea wall side of the dock so as not to interfere with the professional charter companies
that will be operating. This is importantlocal boaters waited a long time for a centrally located dinghy docklets not blow it with selfish oblivious
behavior. Thats not directed at you, unless you think it isbased on some past indiscretion...you know who you are! Sea wall!

We would really appreciate that dinghies stay on the sea wall side, said Public Information Officer Nicole Mooradian. And we hope people clean up
after themselves and be respectful to their fellow boaters.

So there it is. The long awaited Fishermans Village dinghy dock is officially in operation. Three years after a promise made but hey, whos keeping
track? Soon there will be another where the new West Marine is slated to be built and that will make three. Still not many based on the size of the marina
but were on the right track.

Filling your bags this time of the year can be a little tougher since we are limited
to less species. Right now whats legal to target is sand dabs, sculpin, calico
and trigger fish - all bottom fish here in Santa Monica Bay. Dont forget, the legal
limits are no more than two hooks on a dropper loop using strip Squid.

If you still havent made it out lobstering, you have a little time left - season closes
on March 22. This season has been strong but remember your limits - ten nets
per boat, seven lobster per angler. Hoop netting is your best bet because, with
all this rain, water visibility is poor for divers.

Wood Over at Catalina things have been quiet as far as the white seabass and yellowtail
but look for that to change when the squid boats start picking up on the back side
of the island.
What wood should I use to build small items
for my boat? If you have the time and inclination to head south and have a valid passport, take
a day and a half to Mexico.they are limiting on yellowtail and rockfish.
The marine environment is rough for any kind
of materials. When it gets to wood, be sure to Oh and be aware of weather patterns, you never know when things could get

Marine grade plywood is the only type
of plywood you should use. The sticker or
stamp on the sheet usually specifies the grade.
Sometimes you can even read approved by
