1. What is the title of the video?

The title of the video was The Hunger Games.
2. What was the video about?
The nation of Panem is country that consists of a wealthy Capital and 12 poor districts. A
rebellion led by the 13th district against the Capitol had resulted in the event known as The Hunger
Games as a punishment for the districts. Each district is forced to give one boy and one girl from ages
12-18, known as tributes, who are chosen at the annual reaping and must fight until there is one
survivor to claim victory as a victor.
Katniss Everdeen, from District 12, volunteers after her sister Primrose was chosen as a tribute
for the 74th Hunger Games. The male tribute is Peeta Mallark who we learn once gave bread to Katniss
to prevent her family from starving. Katniss entrusts her friend Gale with her family and tells her
mother to stay strong for Prim. At the Capitol, Katniss and Peeta are taken and dressed by Effie Trinket
where they are disgusted by the luxuries. Cinna, her stylist, helps Katniss make an impression by
creating a costume for her that burst into flames for the Gala Entry Parade. After undergoing training
with weapons and survival skills, when Katniss goes to get graded by the game makers and sponsors,
including Seneca Crane, she misses her first shot, but perfects her second shot. However, the game
workers were not paying attention so Katniss fires an arrow straight through an apple in a roasted pigs
mouth; due to this she received a score of 11 while Peeta got an 8.
Before the games, Haymitch warns Katniss to avoid the bloodbath at the beginning by heading to
high ground in search of water. As the horn sounds, the tributes rush to the cornucopia full of weapons
and backpacks while attacking each other and Katniss manages to grab a pack and escape. She finds
water and hears 13 bangs indicate 13 deaths.
In the games, Katniss faces many challenges like escaping from a forest fire to lure her to the
center and in the process gets a nasty burn. However, five tributes spot her and try to kill Katniss but
she climbs a tree. With help from Rue, from District 11, she releases trackerjackers which are venomous
wasps. Katniss escapes and grabs a bow and arrows, but she begins to hallucinate.
Katniss later wakes up and befriends Rue. They plan to destroy the mountain of supplies at the
Cornucopia and while Rue distracts them by lighting fires, Katniss shoots a bag of apples detonating the
land mines.
Katniss finds Rue trapped under a net and releases her just before theyre attacked and Rue dies.
Katniss tries to calm Rue by singing to her and then gathers flowers from the forest and spreads them
over Rue.
After the announcement that there can be two victors, Katniss finds Peeta and takes care of him.
She helps him heal by going to the cornucopia to get the medicine for Peeta and almost dies. Katniss
and Peeta begin to have a romantic relationship, but Katniss is just acting to get the sponsors and people
to like her.
A giant mutated dog then leaps out at them one day at night and Katniss and Peeta sprint through
the forest to escape. They climb the cornucopia where Peeta helps Katniss climb on top barely making it
up himself. Cato, the other survivor left, then starts to fight with them but Katniss is able to shoot him
down, causing him to fall down below, where the mutants torture him before Katniss shoots him out of
his misery.
No helicopter comes and announcement says that only one victor can win. Peeta begs Katniss to
kill him but she and Peeta agree to take Nightlock berries hinting that the Capitol would have no winners
instead of one. Before they commit suicide, a speaker says that they both win and they are brought back
to the Capitol.
Haymitch tells them how foolish they are to have defied the Capitol like that and instructs them
to play up the star-crossed couple routine at their final interview. They oblige but Haymitch relents that
it will never be enough for the Capitol. Seneca Crane is also forced to commit suicide.
Peeta and Katniss travel back in District 12 and are met with a heros welcome. Haymitch warns
Katniss that she is now a political enemy. They are greeted by a crowd of cheering residents including
Primrose, Katniss mother, and Gale. Peeta takes Katniss hand and holds it up in the air. At the capital,
President Snow watches the District 12 welcome from the Capitol. Walking away, he wonders what to
do about the two victors and the feelings of rebellion they may have created in the Districts.

3. Describe the relevance of this video to this course.

The relevance of the video to this course is that it demonstrates a form of leadership
specifically dictatorship. President Snow rules his minions, the game keepers, to abide by his decisions.
When they do not meet his expectations, he kills them (Senaca). Furthermore, the video teaches that in a
dictatorship, only a small group benefit while others suffer. This is seen by the Capitol who are
overflowing with luxuries compared to the districts which look like the slums in comparison.
Furthermore, President Snow ensures to make sure there is no hope due to the fact he fears a rebellion
would occur. Since this course discusses civics, forms of leadership play a major role in its content.
4. List what you found interesting or surprising:
Throughout the film, I found many things quite interesting. I find the fact that Katniss is so
determined and a strong character surprising due to the fact that though she was raised in the slums of
District 12, she still never gave up on hope and rebelling in small ways. Furthermore, I found it
surprising when she volunteered as tribute for her sister though one may be upset if their sibling is
most likely to die, only a few would take their place. To add on, I found it interesting in the way the
dystopian world was in general with the Capitol being extravagant while the Districts suffer by doing all
the dirty work for them. To add on, it was surprising that Haymitch also turned out to care for Katniss
even though he appeared to hate her at the start he sent her medicine and persuaded her to do the
right thing to stay alive.
5. List any questions you have about this video:
1. Is Senaca Crane dead?
2. Why might none of the districts or other tributes in the previous Hunger Games rebelled?
3. Why would the citizens of the Capitol find amusement in the vile idea of The Hunger Games?
4. How might the story have been different if Katniss had not volunteered for The Hunger Games?
5. How might the story have been different if Katniss did kill Peeta Mallark.
6. Write a personal response on your thoughts on this video (What you learned, how it may or may
not apply to your life, how it made you feel, what did it make you think about,etc.).

The movie was a very interesting film to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I learnt many new
things about dictatorships, as explained in question three, and about a dystopian world. Furthermore, in a
way, the concept of the dystopian world is present in real life in my opinion. First-world countries, like
Canada, are overflowing with luxuries and the people do not appreciate it just like the citizens of the Capitol
didnt. Similarily, people from third-world countries live in unfortunate conditions with few to no luxuries
while businesses pay them to provide first-world countries with products for a cheaper price. This is similar
to the twelve districts of Panem. The movie in general made me feel a rush of adrenaline for the action
sequences, but overall, I was horrified that such a thing as The Hunger Games exsisted where mere children,
just like me, had to fight and kill to survive.
