Course Name: Algebra 1.5

Course Overview:

Algebra is designed to give students the requisite


skills that provide a foundation for all future
mathematics courses. Students will explore writing and
solving linear equations, powers and exponents, quadratic
equations, polynomials and factoring, graphing and solving
linear inequalities, functions, and geometry.

Throughout the course, mathematical concepts will be taught with an


emphasis on real-world application, technology, and cross-curricular
interaction. Questions like How do you solve for the unknown? How do you
graph a situation that you encounter in your own life? and How can I use
math to make my life easier? will be addressed throughout the course

Text book Calculator (recommended TI-83,
3 ring binder TI-84 or scientific calculator will

Notebook

Tardy Policy:
Class begins at the scheduled time. Be responsible for
yourself; get here on time and be ready to learn.
If you come to class late, hand me your pass and catch up
with what is going on.
Unexcused tardies will be dealt with on an individual basis.
Please do not be late as a courtesy to everyone in class.

Attendance:
Much of this class is taught by doing math, notes, and
discussion, so it is extremely important that you are here! If
you are absent you are responsible for getting any
notes/handouts/worksheets that you missed and for
completing the assignment from that day.
Missing the day of a quiz or test: Schedule a time with me to
come in and make it up.
Truancies (skipping class unexcused) result in a ZERO for all
work missed on that day, including missed tests.

Classroom Procedures:
Work quietly during homework time in class Use your time
wisely and do not disrupt others.
Be respectful and be responsible. Raise your hand and show
courtesy and tolerance for others.
Cell phones are not allowed for use during class. BHS
Procedure:
i. 1st incident Verbal warning to put phone away
ii. 2nd incident Teacher will confiscate phone and keep until
2:20.
iii. 3rd incident Teacher will confiscate phone, phone is given
to administration, parent will be contacted to come and get
the phone.
No pop or food in the carpeted areas of the school. Water is
okay.
Ipods may be used during homework time if they are not
distracting to others.


Grading:
The course grade will be determined by two parts:
o Tests 50%
o Quizzes 30%
o Assignments 10%
o Final Exam 10%

Late work will be dealt with on a case to case basis but may be subject
to a point deduction.
Expect to spend 20-30 minutes of quality homework time on algebra
each day. Typically there will be 1-2 quizzes a chapter, and 1 test per
chapter.
Grades will be assigned according to the following scale: (BHS
Standard Scale)

98-100 A+ 88-89 B+ 78-79 C+ 68-69
D+
93-97 A 83-87 B 73-77 C 63-67
D
90-92 A- 80-82 B- 70-72 C- 60-62
D-
59 and below
