REFLECTIVE SKILL
ABSTRACT

Self assessment is the process of looking at oneself in order to assess aspects

that are important to ones identity. It is one of the motives that derive self evaluation,
along with self verification and self enhancement. The self assessment motive will
prompt people to seek information to confirm their uncertain self concept and at the
same time people use self assessment to enhance their certainty of their own self
knowledge. In the current era of education, student self assessment stands as a
promise of improved student motivation in social skills and learning. This article
focuses student self assessment and its importance in influencing students self
acceptance and developing reflective skills.

INTRODUCTION:

Self assessment is arguably the most powerful means for a tertiary education
organization to understand and improve its educational performance. Self assessment
is a systematic process of data driven self reflection. Self assessment by pupils, far
from being a luxury, it is in fact an essential component of formative assessment.
When anyone is trying to learn, feedback about the effort has three elements.
Recognition of the desired goal, evidence about present position, and some
understanding of a way to close the group between two. All three must be understood
to some degree by any one before he or she can take action to improve learning. If
formative assessment is to be productive, pupils should be trained in self assessment
so that they can understand the main purposes of their learning and these by grasp
what they need to do to achieve. Self assessment is one of the motives that drive self
evaluation, along with self verification and enhancement. Self assessment motive will
prompt people to seek information to confirm their uncertain self concept rather than
their certain self concept. At the same time people use self assessment to enhance
their certainty of their own self knowledge. Self assessment provides the opportunity
to discover where a persons true interest, talents, values and abilities lie. Having this
information can be essential to determining a satisfying career path. It is also helpful
when creating goals and understanding ones personality.

In social psychology, self assessment is the process of looking at oneself in

DATA COLLECTION AND METHODOLOGY

Collection of data was done by using survey method. A rating scale was
prepared for it. A rating scale is a set of categories designed to elicit information about
a quantitative or qualitative attribute. I prepared a 3 point rating scale. It state criteria
and provide 3 response selection to describe the quality or frequency to judge
themselves about their work. The descriptive scale were always, sometimes and never.
This self assessment is made to check the social skill of the people. Taking social skill
as a topic for assessment. I tries to study the influence of student self assessment in
their personal and academic life. The tool contain six statements, each statements has
3 answers Always, Sometimes, Never and it contain 2,1,0 tally marks respectively for
the positive questions and vice versa.

ANALYSIS

After preparing the statements I took 25 copies of the tool and distributed it
among the pupils. The pupils had no ideas about what it was. I explained them what is
self-assessment and also I gave them a clear idea about the tool. Then I explained how
to fill the tool. Some pupils couldnt fill the tool by themselves. I helped them by
reading out and explaining each questions.

After pupils self evaluation, I made a review about it. The pupils told me that
was a good experience for them. They could realise their good and drawbacks in their
reading habits. They thanked me for giving them such a tool. Through this, they could
evaluate or assess themselves apart from others judgments. From this as a teacher I
could understand my pupils reading habits. Some pupils respond poorly. I hope I
could give those more practice in reading in the coming classes.

Almost all girls had given positive answers and only a few of them tick never
for some statements. But the boys were most trust worthy. They had given sometimes
and never as answer to most of the statements. Only a few have given always as
answers to positive statement. There was variety in answering. This shows the
difference in personality.

The three components of the self assessment programme was completed in this
study. Self monitoring, a skill necessary for effective self assessment involves focused
attention to some aspect of behaviors or thinking. Students gave deliberate attention to
what they are doing, how they behave and what is their attitude. The second step self
judgment involves identifying progress towards targeted performance. It helps them to
know what they are and what they want to be. Through the third step, students choose
subsequent learning goals and activities to improve their goods, correct their mistakes
and determine the self.
