Sanitary Pads Manufacturing Project

MENSTRUAL HYGIENE THE NEED

Menstrual hygiene is one of the most private and intimate needs of

women and due to the social taboos associated with it in rural areas of
India, the issue is seldom given the due consideration. The physiological
changes and changes in the appearance during puberty with the onset of
menarche often leave young girls with lot of mental tension. Menstruation
is still regarded as something unclean or dirty in Indian rural society.
Although menstruation is a normal physiological process, there are several
myths and misconceptions and practices around it, which most often
result in adverse health outcomes. Girls commonly use cloth because of
economic reasons to protect themselves during menstruation and often
the cloth is reused and even interchanged among the family members.
Hygiene-related practices of women during menstruation are of
considerable importance, as it has a health impact in terms of increased
vulnerability to reproductive tract infections (RTI). The interaction of socio-
economic status, menstrual hygiene practices and RTI are noticeable.
Today millions of women are sufferers of RTI and its complications and
often the infection is transmitted to the offspring of the pregnant mother.
Many adolescent girls particularly in rural areas find going to school during
menstruation a challenge. Many of them absent themselves during this
period to avoid embarrassment. This has serious repercussions on two
main aspects: education and health of the girl child. Provision of low cost
hygienic napkins at the school level and improving access of napkins in
the rural areas are critical interventions that can go a long way in paving
the health of women and girl child.

Benefits of using sanitary disposable Pads:

Hygienic way of handling menstruation: Using reusable homemade

napkins does not provide a sterile medium for absorbing the flow.
When cloth wads are used after washing sometimes germs and
fungal medium settles in if not properly sun dried. Disposable
napkins being sterile offer more comfort and better hygiene.
Enhances mobility: Disposable napkins are easy to carry and during
menstruation time, one can be assured of continuous protection.
Studies have revealed that when disposable sanitary napkins were
made available to young girls, their school attendance increased to
a large extent.
Womans empowerment: The confidence and capability to handle
the menstrual process without fear or embarrassment empowers
the woman to a considerable extent. The ability to decide her
schedules and manage her body functions in a hygienic way gives
her extreme sense of well being and safety
