Integumentary System

Dermis & accessory structures

Skin; largest organ of the body by weight!

How is Skin Color Determined?
Melanocytes produce melanin
Melanin
Pigment that determines skin color
Absorbs uv radiation
Found in the stratum basale
Can pass pigment to other
cells for protection
FUN FACT: The amount or melanocytes in everyone's skin is about the same, but the
amount of melanin produced by the melanocytes is different. This is what
determines the color of your skin. Darker skinned people produce more melanin than
lighter skinned people.
Function and structure of dermis
Binds epidermis to underlying tissue
Made mostly of connective tissue
Gives skin flexibility and strength
Consists of...
Nerve ending sweat gland sebaceous glands muscle fiber
and hair follicles
Dermal papilla
Vascular
Subcutaneous or Hypodermis layer
The Layer of skin
that lies beneath
the dermal layer
consists of adipose
tissue
insulates the body

Accessory Structures
Nails
Hair
Arrector pili muscle
Sebaceous Glands
Sweat glands
Eccrine
Apocrine
Nail
Protective covering on
the ends of fingers and
toes
The lunula
most actively growing area
Epithelial cells divide
new cells are keratinized
pushing the old cells forward

Fun Fact: The thumbnail grows the slowest while the

middle finger grows the fastest
Hair
Found everywhere except
palms, soles, lips,
nipples and parts of
reproduction organs .
Hair follicle
Hair root
Hair shaft
Arrector pili muscle
goosebumps
Location: Found
Sebaceous Glands
everywhere on the skin
apart from the palms and
soles

Definition: numerous
microscopic glands in
the dermis that usually
open into the hair
follicles and secrete
sebum

Sebum: an oily or waxy

matter to lubricate and
waterproof the skin and
hair

AKA Sudoriferous
Eccrine
Most abundant
Forehead, neck, back
Produce sweat when hot
Apocrine
Active at puberty
Produce sweat when
upset, frightened, in
pain, during sexual
arousal.
Develop scent
