Government of the District of Columbia

Department of Transportation

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Dear Residents/ANC/Local Businesses/Property Managers:

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin an alley restoration project in your neighborhood. This will
include full alley depth restoration with DDOT standard brick paving and asphalt restoration for the alley width across
each of the four cross streets. This work is scheduled to start on Monday, March 6, 2017, and take approximately fifteen
weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Exact Location: Alley running parallel west of First Street NW starting from Thomas Street NW (in the south) to
Bryant Street NW (in the north)and crossing U Street NW, V Street NW, W Street NW, and Adams Street NW
(Squares 3114, 3116, 3119, 3122, 3125). The contractor is authorized to work during the hours of 7:00 am to 7:00 pm,
Monday through Saturday. The scope of work will include removal of temporary utility and restoration of pavement,
please refer to the attached work area map on the back of this letter.

This work will be phased, where each block is expected to take three weeks. During this time the alley will be closed in
the areas under construction. Parking in the areas of the alley under construction will not be possible while work is
underway. Pedestrians and vehicles will not have access to private property from the alley. EMERGENCY NO
PARKING signs will be posted seventy-two (72) hours prior to the beginning of construction work in your area. In
emergency situations access may be possible by notifying the DDOT on-site inspector /contractor.

Residential: If the location of your trash collection is from the alley, your trash will be collected along the front of
your property until the completion of the alley project. Trash will not have to be separated. If your trashcan is too
cumbersome to handle, please use thick trash bags and place them in the public space in front of your property.
This action is being coordinated by DDOT with the Department of Public Works (DPW) - Solid Waste Team.
All questions regarding trash pick-up must be directed to DPW at 202-576-9000, e-mail: johnny.gaither@dc.gov.

Commercial: For commercial properties along the alley, with smaller dumpsters, our contractors will move them
aside, and place them back in the same place after the work is completed. If you have a large dumpster, please
alert your hauler to this work activity and have them to contact DDOT at 202-671-2833, so that the contractor can
work with the hauler to mitigate any impact on your trash pick-up services.

If weather conditions, schedule changes, or unforeseen issues do not permit our contractor to begin this work on the date
stated above, the new start date for construction will be posted on the Emergency No Parking Signs located in the alley
throughout the construction project site.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we hope that the improved alley will make this temporary
inconvenience worthwhile. If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please contact DDOT Call Center at
202-671-2700, by email ddot@dc.gov, or be on the lookout for inspectors on-site wearing a safety vest.

Sincerely,

Niranjan Sharma, Civil Engineer
