Major II

Project Title: Illuminator A home automation application

implementing the concept of IOT.

Abstract:

With the age of digitization here, the world is moving towards more and more
applications of IOT in the IT industry where and whenever possible. For instance
the opening and closing of a door whenever a person leaves or enters through it
or the regulation of temperature of a refrigerator based on the temperature
outside etc. By this we are extending the usage of technology in our daily lives
and providing smart solution to the daily problems faced by us. Implementation
of IOT involves a major role of the sensors which tells the main system about
any change in the surroundings and hence takes the appropriate actions. Our
project on IOT will also be inculcating features of security like facial recognition
and the voice to text conversion just to make the project more secure and safe for
an owner.[1][2]

INTRODUCTION

This project introduces us to HiveMQ which is a MQTT (MQ Telemetry

Transport) lightweight messaging specifically for enterprises which find
themselves in the emerging age of Machine-to-Machine communication
(M2M) and the Internet of Things. This project aims to deploy and implement
HiveMQ on Amazon Cloud. Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary
of Amazon.com, offers a suite of cloud-computing services that make up
an on-demand computing platform. [3]

This project also aims to develop a smart light dimming system, which is
remotely controlled by Android apps via handheld devices, e.g., smartphones,
tablets, and so forth. This smart light dimming system can be remotely
controlled and self-learning mode can be enabled by a single handheld device
via Wi-Fi transmission.

IOT or Internet of Things is the new concept here in the world which literally
means connecting every living/non-living thing to the internet for the human
satisfaction and betterment. Now taking into consideration the energy crisis
these days, a solution had to be provided for the saving the energy and the
over-utilization of it. So by this project that purpose is being served since it
will take care of any presence in the room and thereafter switch the lights
on/off. Also for additional security a facial pattern recognition system has been
devised to take care of each and every personal entering the house or your
room[4]. The system will make sure that only those faces which it recognizes
are taken into account and given an entry into the quarters and no one else
hence preventing any theft or robbery. With the world going digitized this will
prove to be a major development in the field of security as well as IOT.
Problem Statement:

As energy saving becomes the hot topic nowadays, one of the issue always
been discussed the energy saving could be achieved through the lighting as it
is one of the most power consumption electrical devices. Although one unit of
the lighting is low, due to their large number and the long duration of their
working period, it becomes one of the energy saving target.

Literature Review:

A Home Automation system is one that employs the integration of multi-touch

mobile devices, cloud networking, wireless communication, and power-line
communication to provide the user with remote control of various lights and
appliances within their home. This system uses a consolidation of a mobile
phone application, handheld wireless remote, and PC based program to provide
a means of user interface to the consumer.[5]

HiveMQ is the MQTT broker for the connected enterprise: The puzzle piece
between constrained devices and enterprise systems. While HTTP is the de-
facto protocol for the human web, communication between machines at scale
requires a paradigm shift steering away from request/response and leading
towards publish/subscribe. This is where the ultra-lightweight, massively
scalable, and easy-to-implement protocol MQTT enters the picture. Amazon
Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, offers a suite of cloud-
computing services that make up an on-demand computing platform. Amazon
markets AWS as a service to provide large computing capacity quicker and
cheaper than a client company building an actual physical server farm. Along
with that the face recognition system will take care of the entries into the room
and with that significantly reducing the risk of any robberies. The system will
have some faces saved in its database memory.[6]

Biometric technology for the smart home using the wireless sensor network is
an upcoming trend. The proposed system employs the biometric in the
authentication for home entrance which enhances home security as well as
easiness of home entering process. The structure of the system is described and
the incorporated communications are analyzed, also estimation for the whole
system cost is given which is something lacking in a lot of other smart home
designs offers. WB-SH is designed to be capable of incorporating in a building
automation system and it can be applied to offices, clinics, and other places.
The project ends with an imagination for the future of the smart home when
employs the biometric technology in a larger and more comprehensive form.

Objectives:

The objective of this project is to deploy and implement HiveMQ on Amazon

cloud. Its main focus is to overcome IoT challenges, built human web
communication between machines and easy implementation of the protocol
MQTT. It also aims to achieve successful controlling & dimming of lights and
to inculcate the security feature of facial recognition in the rooms so that only
the people recognized get an access.
