When planning a system, I look at the total cost of the conduit
infrastructure combined with the cost of equipment, cabling
and labor. In the days of analog video with multi-core coaxial
cabling and separation of signal types, the cost of a metal
conduit-based solution was quite high due to the large sized
conduits. Consultants with little field experience as installers
would typically specify 1.25-inch and 2-inch conduit terminating
to standard wall boxes. Clearly, this is not possible without
considerable labor cost to field modify standard boxes to accept
the larger conduits. Today its more cost effective to recommend
multiple 1-inch or 0.75-inch conduits instead of one larger conduit.
The thinner conduits are easier to bend and terminate, which
results in greater cost savings. Extrons AVTrac is a low profile, floor-mounted raceway system to safely and

he new fact of life for AV professionals is that digital
is here to stay. But just like any other technological
progress, it doesnt necessarily mean that what
came before it becomes obsolete. In fact, analog and
digital will likely continue to co-exist forever; ultimately, human
perception is an analog process.
Despite what some people say, designing systems for digital
does not mean that you have to discard everything youve learned
about designing analog AV systems. Besides the fact that there are
times when parallel analog/digital systems make sense, we must
also recognize that fundamentally, there are many similarities
in the design phases of any AV project, whether analog or digital.
But there are also many new concepts and issues we need to
understand, if were going to successfully design AV systems that
include digital technologies.
Educating yourself on digital technologies and design best
practices is no longer optional. Most AV pros have already
encountered digital technologies in their projects, either as
conscious design decisions, owner requirements, or the need to
interface with other technology systems in the building. How
you deal with these digital challenges can mean the difference
between success and failure in the evolving world of pro AV.
The key to any successful AV system design analog or digital
is understanding and satisfying the needs of your customer.
This allows you to design and build a system that meets their
expectations and requirements for functionality, performance,
budget, and future growth. Awareness of what your customer
needs will allow for a streamlined, efficient system design,
appropriately suited to the application that ensures reliability
and maximizes cost savings.
