New Seedlings Ready

TheTamilNaduAgriculturalUniversitysSugarcaneResearchStationhasraisedprotrayseedlingsinsugarcane
andwillshortlydistributethesametotheneedyfarmersbytheendofthismonth.About5,000seedlingsofTNAU
(SC)Si8isavailableatthestation.

Itwillensureeconomytofarmersincultivatingthesugarcaneonmanyfronts.Primarily,thedurationofthecrop,
whichis11months,willbereducedto10months,asthestationhastakenonemonthsperiodfordevelopingthe
protrayseedlings.Secondly,theseedlingswouldregistermorethan95percentinsurvivalatfarmersfields,said
R.Chandrasekaran,ProfessorandHeadoftheStation.

R.Nageswari,AssistantProfessorofAgronomy,saidthattherehasbeenachangeinthecultivatingpatternin
sugarcaneandtheprotrayseedlingshasbeengainingpopularityamongthefarmers.Shesaidthatsugarcaneplants
wouldregisterfastergrowthandthequalityofcanewouldbefarbetterthantheconventionalmethod.
