(a) Find the total hydrostatic force on a circular drain (diameter 2m), the
top of which is placed 9m down the inclined wall shown.

(b) A plank of wood of density 650kg/m3, floats on water. The plank is

placed in water as shown. What depth will the plank be submersed to?

(c) Consider rectangular tank of length 6m, height 3m and width 2m. It
contains oil (density = 750kg/m3) to a depth of 1.65m. If the tank is
accelerated (horizontally) at 1.75m/s2, what is the difference in pressure
on the base between the front and back end of the tank?
(d) A U-tube manometer shown is used to measure the gauge pressure of
water in a pipe. Given the atmospheric pressure is 101.3 kN/m2,
determine the gauge pressure and absolute pressure of the fluid at A.

(e) A small diameter tube is inserted into a liquid whose wetting angle is
140. Will the level of the liquid in the tube rise or drop? Explain.

(f) A treasure chest (0.25 tonnes, 0.75m3) is lying on the sea bed, at a
depth of 50m. If the density of sea water is 1025kg/m3, calculate the
normal force the sea bed exerts on the container.
Thermo
(a) The base of an aluminium saucepan is 20cm in diameter and 3mm
thick, and is heated on a gas hob. If the temperature inside the pan is
165C, the thermal conductivity of the pan is 199W/mC and the rate of
heat transfer is 1215W, determine the temperature outside the pan

(b) Describe ways you could increase the rate of heat transfer in the
saucepan

(c) A piston-cylinder assembly contains nitrogen is compressed by an

external force on the piston of 5kN and cooling to the ambient
temperature of 22C, in such a way that the pressure and volume are
related by pVn = constant. Atmospheric pressure is 101kPa. Given an
initial system state of pressure 385 kPa and volume 2.5 m3, and a final
volume of 0.45 m3. Evaluate the work transfer if n = 1.17

(d) A gas at 450 kPa is trapped inside an insulated piston-cylinder device.

It expands from a volume of 1m3 to 2.95m3. At the same time a paddle
mixes the gas at 200rpm using 50Nm torque for 10 minutes. Evaluate
the net change in internal energy U of the system.

(e) Determine the change in pressure if 1.3 kg of an unknown gas with

molecular weight of 25.72 g/mol, is compressed from 127C and 1.96m3
to 202C and 1.23m3.

(f) A piston-cylinder contains 400 kg of steam at 500 kPa and 340oC. A

paddle wheel stirs the gas at 3000 rpm with a torque of 10 Nm, the
chamber loses heat to the surroundings at a rate of 2.65 kW, as the gas
is heated for 4 minutes by an electrical resistance heater, consuming 0.5
kW of electric power. If the gas is compressed by boundary work of
535kJ, find the net work done and the change in internal energy.
