13. ABSTRACT (Maximum 200 words)

This volume is the first of a projected 12-volume report entitled, "Hydrologic Engineering
Methods for Water Resources Development". The report is being prepared by the Hydrologic
Engineering Center as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers participation in the
International Hydrological Decade. Volume 1 describes the general nature of water resources
improvements and the general procedures used in hydrologic engineering studies. The types of
water resources improvements covered in this volume include electric power development,
multipurpose reservoirs, and water resources systems. Remaining volumes of the report will
describe detailed hydrologic engineering methods. As a part of this volume, three generalized
computer program descriptions covering different phases of hydrologic engineering are
included. The HEC-1, Flood Hydrograph Package covers most type of problems generally
associated with flood hydrograph analysis. HEC-2, Water Surface Profiles, is primarily
concerned with investigations related to river hydraulics problems. The third program, HEC-3,
Reservoir System Analysis, deals with problems related to the planning, design, and operation
of a system of reservoirs for conservation purposes.
