Nazi Germany Timeline 1919-1933

Sep 1919 - Adolf Hitler left WWI disillusioned and bitter. He felt the war
had ended too soon and the Weimar Republic had sold Germany out by
agreeing to the Treaty of Versailles. In 1919 he joined a small political
party in Munich, known as the German Workers' Party.

Oct 1920 Sturm Abteilung (SA) (Stormtroopers) formed. The SA wore

grey jackets, brown shirts (khaki shirts originally intended for soldiers in
Africa but purchased in bulk from the German Army by the Nazi Party),
swastika armbands, ski-caps, knee-breeches, thick woolen socks and
combat boots. (2)

decided he needed his own personal bodyguard and on 9th November,
1925 the Saalschutz became known as the Schutzstaffel (SS). The word
Schutzstaffel means "defence echelon" "The name was universally
abbreviated to SS, not in Roman or Gothic letters but written as a
lightening flash in imitation of ancient runic characters. The SS was known
as the Black Order."

July 1925 - Max Amann publishes first volume of Mein Kampf. While in
prison for 5 years after being found guilty for the Beer Hall Putsch, Hitler
wrote this book. Max Amnan, his business manager, proposed that Hitler
should spend his time in prison writing his autobiography. Hitler, who had
never fully mastered writing, was at first not keen on the idea. However,
he agreed when it was suggested that he should dictate his thoughts to a
ghostwriter. The prison authorities surprisingly agreed that Hitler's
chauffeur, Emil Maurice, could live in the prison to carry out this task.
