Writers Workshop

Common Core Standard:

CC.1.2.4.C

o Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a text, including what


happened and why, based on specific information in the text.

CC.1.2.4.E

o Use text structure to interpret information (e.g., chronology, comparison,


cause/effect, problem/solution).

o Integrate information from two texts on the same topic to demonstrate

Objective: Students will research, record, organize and write a summary of a


historical person.

Materials:

Biography Articles
Book Words packet
9 Square Organizer
Final Draft layout

Motivation:

I will show students a video about how to write a biography.

Instruction:

Students will be assigned a historical person to research.

Jackie Robinson
Booker T Washington
George Washington Carver
The students will be handed all the materials needed including
o Articles
o Writing Workshop Packet
o Final Draft Paper (Later on when all the research, organization,
editing, review and rough draft are finished)
We will review the writing process for the biographies.
Go through the packet with students and discuss how we will be working
through the writing process.

Guided Practice:

We will be doing one more article about Billie Holliday, this will be the
final guided practice before students have the chance to go ahead and
individually begin their research.

Independent Practice (Writing Process):

Pre-writing:
Students will first be given the articles and writing packets.
Students will read the individual articles completely through
Students will then go back and begin highlighting important
information about their chosen person.
Students will then use written information, and fill out the 9 square
organizer with headings to label the sentence.
After completing the nine square organizer, and having information
filled in, students will have me check their work before being approved
to go forward.
After being approved, students will take the information, and organize
them by cutting the information and placing them onto the book
words outline for each individual paragraph area

Student will need to have their squares approved to ensure they are
placed in the correct order before being allowed to glue them to the
Book words section.
Students will again check in and then can move into taking the
sentences from the article, and write them into their own words.
When the organizer is complete, students will l again check in with me
before moving onto each paragraph area (Book Word organizer).
After all the organization is done, students will again check in with me
a final time to then begin writing their rough draft.
Rough Draft:
Students after being approved to move into the rough draft stage, will
write their rough draft using the Book Words organizer as the layout
to writing the biography piece.
Students will check in with me after every single paragraph is written
to look for general grammar, spelling, and conventions.
Editing/Revising:
Students will then have a chance to have peers review their writing
and get feedback about where there may be mistakes and things to
change.
Students will again check in with me after every single paragraph
before being allowed to move forward into the final draft.
Final Draft:
Students will write their final draft of the biography
Students as always will be checking in with me after every paragraph
to ensure they are following the directions located in the packet.
Each students will meet with me about their writing and we will
conference to see how we could make their final draft better.

Publish:

Students will then be given an art craft to complete along with their
writing where they will make a representation of their chosen person
and then their work will be displayed on the bulletin board.

Assessment:

Throughout the entire writing process, students will have a checklist


they use to make sure they have completed each step
Each student will have check in with me after every paragraph they
write, which allows me to see how well they are writing and where
their areas of need are.

Modifications:

One student will be wearing an FM system


I will be wearing a lapel microphone
Repeating directions for student who have troubling processing
information
Chunking tasks into smaller parts.
Check for understanding of directions.

Frequent feedback and praise
Extra time to complete classwork for a few group of students.
