CE 306 Process Design A (4 + 0 + 0), ECTS 7.5

An engineer has to be able to work with unfamiliar data, work in a team environment and solve
problems that rely on making decisions without a full set of information and, of course, work to meet
agreed deadlines.
Unlike other courses, where candidates use equation, solve problems and follow design procedures,
this course requires them to synthesise theory and data from other areas and apply their own judgement
to solve new problems.
Course lecturers will need to provide guidance in order to ensure that each member of the design
group is given the opportunity to fully engage in the process; in this case the process is just as
important as the result.
The main outcome of this group-based project is a single group report. However, within this overall
group report individual blocks are researched and submitted by group member working on their own.
This block of material deals with specific technical aspects of the overall process, such as the design
of a distillation column, absorption column, heat exchangers the marks for this section are allocated
to individual candidates.

CE 505 Chemical Engineering Design Project A (0 + 4 + 0), ECTS 7.5

The key aim of this module is to prepare graduates with technical and leadership qualities. The more
specific aims are:
To ensure students gain professional expertise by completing fundamental design of a chemical plant
through individual and group based tasks.
To be able to integrate their knowledge and understanding of engineering, mathematics, science, and
computer-based methods with economic, environmental, social and ethical principles to design new
processes or products.
To grasp importance of sustainability in chemical engineering practice and to incorporate
sustainability principles at the design stage of new products or processes.
Tasks are concerned with the gathering of sufficient information and project background details.
Specific tasks will vary but will usually include:
1. Decide on the main chemistry and select a suitable process route.
2. Look for similar flow schemes or build up the flow scheme using literature searches (as guidance).
3. Identify key unit operations and make sure that both their function and purpose is clear.
4. Collect possible operating conditions these may change as the group gathers more process
information and knowledge.
5. Prepare the flow scheme that will be used.
6. Complete material and energy balances this requires knowing or estimating the composition of
the reactor effluent, estimating performance of equipment, setting the specifications of separation
processes, etc.
7. Address and scope control, safety, cost and sustainability issues.
8. Split the process into sections, each section should contain a major process unit, or a number of
units, that can be used to demonstrate individual chemical engineering knowledge.
9. If time permits, and after receiving feedback, correct the flow schemes and initial scoping design
and start more detailed technical work.
During the period of the project, group members will be allocated specific tasks which benefit the
group, particularly during the final stages when reports are being authored. For example, someone
should be allocated to cover the following: the overall economic appraisal of the process; an overall
draft of the entire process PFD; a written section covering the overall process description; a critical
assessment of assumptions and their impact on the reliability of the design; assembling and authoring
the report, etc..
Depending on circumstances, it would normally be expected that these sections be contained within
the group project report. Sections authored by individual group members must be clearly associated
with the author and the use of a formal document style is encouraged; a style similar to this document,
with headers & footers identifying individuals responsible for each section, is acceptable.

CE 507 Chemical Engineering Research Project (0 + 2 + 0), ECTS 7.5

All students are given a specific academic task in their final year to develop a research project. As a
level 10 student, you are expected to choose a research topic in the chemical engineering discipline,
establish a research question, and think of effective planning of the project. The general aim of these
research projects is to develop skills in identifying, collating, analysing and commenting on
information which is found in the scientific literature, or is being carried out by companies, research
institutes and Universities in chemical and process technology related areas.
A second objective is to experience tackling something, which is unknown, and generally not covered
in a single textbook. Throughout your career you will be faced with problems of one form or another
which requires some element of research e.g. troubleshooting, process optimisation, product
development and it is very important to demonstrate that you can:
Think independently
Use sound chemical engineering principles and draw on previous theories to support your idea
Communicate findings and conclusions to others.
Although some projects may be similar, your own approach and methodology will mean the
final report will be unique. Remember that there is generally no right answer to your problem for any
number of reasons including the fact that research often takes quite different paths to what
was first envisaged. Having said that good projects do have some recognisable features:
Well explained, clarity and ability to express views supported by evidence.
They do not adopt a scatter gun approach and pull in every reference.
A comprehensive focused review of recent literature.
If you are asked to form an opinion, then this should be supported from the literature.
Forming an opinion is good being opinionated is not.
Evidence of bringing your own thoughts into the project
Proper referencing and use of peer reviewed journals. Web sites are not recommended sources of
technical evidence.

CE 506 Chemical Engineering Design Project B (0 + 4 + 0), ECTS 7.5

This module is left for each member to concentrate on specific design tasks. Each member of the
group should have a full appreciation of the chosen process and know how their specific section
interacts with sections before and after. The individual report involves the technical design of the
major unit (already assigned to the individual). The following detailed tasks need to be addressed:
1. A complete PFD of the section showing all unit operations, pumps, heat exchangers and major
control valves will be needed.
2. Material and energy balance tables of the section, complete with operating conditions, transport
properties and thermal properties (of each stream) must be completed.
3. Clear identification of the unit/units (as designed) will be required.
4. A concise description of the process unit and how the particular unit will work is required. You do
not need to include a fundamental description which can easily be found in the standard text books
(specifically Vol 6 of Coulson& Richardson, Sinnott et al Chemical Engineering Design).
5. A detailed technical design of the unit will be needed. This involves finding the volume and
physical size of the allocated unit. In addition, mechanical drawings and vessel wall thickness
calculations (including corrosion allowance) will be required.
6. Startup and shutdown of the unit/units needs to be considered - including how this is likely to affect
utility loads.
7. You should design the process instrumentation and controls that will be needed to satisfy normal
processing objectives, startup and shutdown. You will need to document your reasons why particular
schemes are used.
8. You must determine the capital cost of your unit (or section of the process). Note that you may
have to include factors for anything that has not been designed in detail. You may have to quickly size
other units by using a simplified procedure, or a CAPD approach.
9. You will need to complete, as close as possible, a P&ID of your unit.
10. After the P&ID is available, you will need to complete a HAZOP study on your main unit, or a
process line in your section. A highlight of the major safety implications will need to be fed into the
group report.
11. The loading on any utilities (cooling water, steam, etc.) is required.
12. A specification sheet for your unit is needed.
13. It is important to document the impact of any assumptions made, and what effect these may have
on your recommendations, for instance if it has been assumed the rate of reaction is x and literature
reports that it is y, what impact is this likely to have?
In addition to the individual report, as outlined above, a group report needs to be prepared and
submitted. The individual efforts, i.e. costings, PFDs, material/energy balances, utilities, P&IDs (from
individual sections) will feed into this overall group report as follows:
Prepare an integrated PFD flowscheme, unit operations and process description for the entire plant.
Lay out an integrated set of material and energy balance tables, with operating conditions and key
properties, for the plant.
Undertake a major risk and safety analysis and insert mitigation steps into this statement.
Review the plant waste strategies and prepare an environmental statement.
Prepare a sustainability statement for the process as a whole.
Given detailed capital costs estimates, complete a full economic analysis of the entire plant,
including a sensitivity analysis.
Review the plant running costs of all utilities for the plant.
Group tasks should be shared out equitably and group members must meet regularly to bring the
group report together into a coherent single document. If an individual choses one of the above as
their secondary item then a higher level of detail is expected this choice must be clearly flagged and
agreed beforehand.
