Language and Identities: Gender, ethnicity and class

Thiscourseisaboutsociolinguistics,andinparticularabouthowlanguage
relatestoidentitiesatdifferentlevelsforexample,howindividualsuse
languagetosignaltheirmembershipofparticularsocialgroups,andhow
differentkindsofsocialgroupingsforexamplepeergroups,communities
andnationsidentifythemselvesthroughlanguage.

Thecoursewillfocusonthreeimportantareasofvariationinlanguage
withinsociety:gender,ethnicityandclass,andwilldiscussthekeyresearch
ineachofthese.Boththeoreticalandappliedaspectsoftopicswillbe
covered.ThenotionofIdentityprovidesthecoursewithaunifyingtheme.

Thiscourseaimstobroadenanddeepenyourcapacityforlanguageanalysis
appliedtorealsocialissuesandproblemsandtoencourageyoutoevaluate
researchcriticallyandundertakeyourowndatacollectionandanalysis.
