A. Introduction

In real life, sometimes it can be seen that women are more talk-active than men.

Women will talk more in certain situation especially when discussing about something in the

same gender speech community. Women will have bigger amount of talking when discussing

family, relationship problem, other women, men, and clothing. (Gabey Faustena,2012). This

circumstances usually called by gossip. This is the stereotype that occurs when we discuss

about the difference of quantity of talk between men and women. According to Keith and

Shuttleworth (2000, p222) as cited in Gabey Faustena (2012, p12) say that women talked

more than men/this is the common perception we had about quantity of talk.

This paper will particularly discuss about the difference of quantity of talk

between men and women in special cases. Apologizing and congratulating have been
commonly used by people in daily life. Sometimes, when student comes late, they will

apologize to the lecturer before he has a sit. Besides, in graduation day, we usually

congratulate the person who is graduated. Those two circumstances are the main cases that

will be discussed in this paper. Here, the researchers would like to tak look at the quantity of

talk between men and women when they are apologizing and congratulating.

The problem that revealed in the paper is that there is no clear explanation in the

differences of quantity of talk between men and women in the related study and theory. In

order to overcome the problem, the researchers have formulated 2 research questions:

1. Do female students talk longer than male students when they are apologizing

for lateness and congratulating for graduation?

2. In what cases female students are more talkactive than male students?

This paper will be divided into four parts in order to make it being structured.

First part is the background study or the introduction. Second, the researchers will tell the

methodology that used in the paper. Third, the researchers will provide the data and also the

discussion. Last, the researcher will conclude the result in conclusion.
