BROGUES: The versatile shoe every man

should own

Longwing Brogues from Ermenegildo Zengna, SS-17.

Mordern brogues trace their roots to a rudimentary shoe originating in Scotland and Ireland. The
modern brogues are a really versatile kind of shoe that every man should have. Newer brogues
are recognized by their decorative perforations. These are often said to stem from the original
Irish brogues as well, specifically from holes intended to allow water to drain from the shoes when
the wearer crossed wet terrain. Over time perceptions have changed and brogues are now
considered appropriate in most contexts, including business and casual activities. Although
Brogues are similar to the "Oxford shoe", they are two completely different types of shoes and are
not to be classified into the same family. With this article you will have an overview of this type of
shoes and a wide perception of how to use them in many contexts.

THE MODERN BROGUE SHOE

The Brogue is a style of low-heeled shoe characterized by multiple- piece, sturdy leather uppers
with decorative perforations (broguing) and serration along the visible edges. Brogues were
traditionally considered to be outdoor or country footwear, but now are appropriate for most
contexts ranging from casual to business accepted. Brogues are most commonly found in four
styles full or "wingtip", semi-, quarter and longwing and four closure styles that range from Oxford
to Derby.
