VE way of Protecting Environment

Background
Indias impressive growth over the past 20 years with the promise of sustained high growth trajectory in
the near future will ensure its emergence as a significant power in the world. However to sustain such a
high growth rate, India would need to triple its current energy needs. This need has to be carefully
balanced against voluntary targets of reducing emission intensity over the next decade and requirement
it places on Indias natural resources.

Indias dependence on low cost fossil fuels, especially sub-bituminous and low-rank coal implies that our
growth depends on mining industry its economic health, execution capabilities and productivity.
Mining needs land and has potential to affect the environment, in a deleterious manner.

Challenge
Meeting the almost contradictory goals of fulfilling the non-satiable hunger for energy, for which we are
still dependent on fossil fuels and ensuring sustainable development requires the search for innovative
ways to make the existing processes more environment friendly.

VE Commercial Vehicles as an organization and with its brands, Volvo Trucks and Eicher Trucks and
Busses; lays a lot of stress on reducing the imprints our products leave on the environment. One of the
ways, and perhaps the most popular one is improving the fuel efficiency of our products. Optimizing fuel
efficiency is a win-win for the society as whole, however in the desperate times some radical measures
need to be adopted which can help us achieve the goal of making the goal of development and
environment protection mutually inclusive.

Suitable non-profit making investments need to be made to protect the environment from further
damages. VE Commercial Vehicles constantly endeavours to enhance our environment solution
portfolio, but in our behest to protect the environment, we face the following 2 challenges:

1. Developing a products/ways by which we can reduce the damage caused to the environment.
2. Convincing the customers to buy such slow and long term yielding technologies.

In the economy driven by profits makes it difficult to find a suitable buyer in the private sector leaving us
with only the government sector. Public sector being a slow running cart which is rarely open to
experimentation makes it a challenge for us to implement the already developed solutions.

The challenges delay the environment protection measures.

Challenge:

1. Suggest suitable solutions to make the goal of development and environment protection mutually
inclusive. Please provide a reference in case the solution is implemented somewhere on the globe.

2. Suggest a prospective customer base for the product suggested.

3. Propose a marketing and selling strategy (Cost vs Benefit analysis) to approach the private sector and
public sector customers for the products suggested.
