reachingtheendofamediumisreferredtoasboundarybehavior.Thereareessentiallyfourpossible
behaviorsthatawavecouldexhibitataboundary:reflection(thebouncingoffoftheboundary),
diffraction(thebendingaroundtheobstaclewithoutcrossingovertheboundary),transmission(the
crossingoftheboundaryintothenewmaterialorobstacle),andrefraction(occursalongwith
transmissionandischaracterizedbythesubsequentchangeinspeedanddirection).Inthispartof

InUnit10ofThePhysicsClassroom,theboundarybehaviorofapulseonaropewasdiscussed.Inthat
unit,itwasmentionedthattherearetwotypesofreflectionforwaves

themedium,twothingsoccur:
Aportionoftheenergycarriedbythepulseisreflectedand
returnstowardstheleftendoftherope.Thedisturbancethatreturnstotheleftisknownas
thereflectedpulse.
Aportionoftheenergycarriedbythepulseistransmittedintothenewmedium.Iftheropeis
