Switch Week Project: Behavior/Suspension Data Analysis

Suspensions and Referrals by Ethnicity. The tables below shows the number of students and

percentage of the total population by ethnicity and the number of suspensions/referrals and percentage of

the total suspensions/referrals by ethnicity. In the 2016-17 school year 63.3% of suspensions were black

students (African and/or African American), while only 30.6% of the total student population are black.

Similarly, 13.3% of suspensions in the 2016-17 school year were American Indian, while only 3.8% of the

student population is American Indian. This suggests that there is disproportionality in the suspensions of

Black and American Indian students. Disproportionality Pie Chart 1 (page 2) shows the disproportionality

of the suspensions.

Suspensions by Free or Reduced Lunch Status and Special Education. The first table below

shows the number of students suspended based on FRL status and the second table shows the number of

students suspended who receive Special Education services. In 2016-17, 93.30% of suspensions were

students who receive FRL, while 88.10% of the total student population receives FRL. Similarly, in the

2016-17 school year 40% of suspensions were given to students who receive Special Education services,

while only 13.7% of the student population receives Special Education services. Disproportionality Pie

Chart 2 (page 3) shows the disproportionality of suspensions

Suspensions by Gender and Ethnicity and Gender Combined. Table 3 (page 4) shows the

number of students suspended based on gender and the second table shows the number of students

suspended with gender and ethnicity combined. In the 2016 17 school year, 70% of suspensions were

male students, while only 46.2% of the student population is male. Similarly, in the 2016 17 school year,

46.7% of suspensions were Black males, while only 14.4% of students are Black males (seen on

disproportionality pie chart). Disproportionality Pie Chart 3 (page 4) shows the disproportionality of

suspensions.

Additional line and bar graphs show the number, percentage and disproportionality of suspensions

can be found at the end of this report in appendix A and B. A list of behaviors resulting in suspensions can

be found in appendix C.
BEHAVIOR DATA ANALYSIS 6
Appendix A

The above graph shows the overall population of various student sub groups.

The above graph breaks down suspensions specifically by ethnicity.

BEHAVIOR DATA ANALYSIS 7

The above graph shows the break down of suspensions for students eligible for FRL and student who
receive Special Education services.

The above graph shoes the break down of suspensions between male and female students.
