Learning from Emotional intelligence: Session 3

We learnt the importance of emotions in our life and how it affects our actions. The ability to
perceive, interpret, manage and control ones emotions is known as emotional intelligence. These
are generally measured using emotional quotient (EQ). The higher the EQ, higher is the stability
and affinity to work in harmony. People with higher EQ tend to be good leaders and lead a stable
and successful in professional and personal life.

The organizations focus on keeping emotions at bay before coming to workplace. But they forget
the fact that emotions are indispensable part of the human. It is what makes them human. They
preach to curb emotions and work as robots rather than to preach them how to control and
manage their emotions. Emotions should controlled rather than suppressed. The employer has to
keep in mind the emotions of the employees before taking any actions.

Emotional intelligence comprises of five elements i.e. Self-regulation, self-awareness, self-

motivation, social skills and empathy.

Self-regulation means the ability to control or manage ones emotion and feelings. Sometimes,
feelings and emotions shown at wrong circumstances bear negative impact upon the outcome. So
one must learn to manage ones emotion and word in accordance with the situation and do as the
situation demands. Unwanted display of emotions act as a hindrance to the productivity of the
actions.

Self-awareness means being completely aware of ones own strengths and weaknesses. One must
be responsive of the situation and check any unwanted emotional hindrance which may
adversely affect. One must be able to predict how one shall react to any given circumstance..
such awareness helps in managing situation effectively without any problems. It also helps in
preventing emotional outbursts and maintaining peace to achieve desired goal.

Self-motivation is an active way to push oneself to limit to achieve maximum output. One needs
to be positive even in the face of adverse situation. One must be willing to stand up even after
falling for umpteenth time. One should have faith upon oneself and keep pushing himself until
the goal is achieved. Imagining oneself as a winner is one way of motivating oneself.

Social skills play a very important role in achieving the target. Words or gestures should be used
judiciously and preciously so as to have desired effect on the listener. The right usage of the
same can create positive ripples whereas negative usage can burst the bubble of ur goal.
Negotiations depend heavily on these skills.

Empathy is a feature which should be in every human being irrespective of goal or targets. Every
human must think of the consequences of ones actions or words upon others and try to
understand what they would have felt, had they been in their place. An empathetic person feels
what other feel and is always respected. Empathetic persons are accepted readily and are often
seen as potential leaders.
In overall, emotional intelligence is an essential tool for the sustenance of a harmonious
workplace and the foundation of better relations between coworkers. It acts as a requisite for
negotiations and deal closure. It helps in increasing the productivity of the organization.
Controlling ones emotions profits both the individual as a human being and the organization as
an institution.
