Grade Level: Kindergarten Title: Doodle Alphabet Art

Author: Samantha McHone & Kelley Sasser
smchone@emich.edu
kclarke4@emich.edu
Enduring Understanding: Students will be able to create an image out of a
letter.
Students will be able to understand that art is
everywhere.

Overview: After analyzing examples of environmental art,

students will have to find the first letter of their name
which will be posted around the room. Students will
glue their letter and the sentence provided to
construction paper. Inside the letter, they will draw a
collage of things that they enjoy or things that
describe them. At the bottom of the page, students
will fill in the blanks for the sentence that states how
the letter is used in their name. i.e.: S is for
Samantha. Once they have completed their artwork
they will share their artwork with a classmate. For the
next session, we will create a book containing all of
the students letters. If there is extra time, we will an
alphabet game having to do with the first letters of
their names.

Objectives: SWBAT: Students will be able to identify letters and

environmental art. Students will be able to use a variety of
lines to create letters.

Assessment Strategies
FORMATIVE: During the lesson we will check for understanding by going
around the room and asking questions about the students artwork.
SUMMATIVE: We will evaluate students work by looking at the overall work of
art. We will also evaluate students work by comparing their work of art and
sentence to the following English language arts standard: print many upper-
and lowercase letters. Along with the English/Language arts standard, we will be
using the following art standards to evaluate the students work: Within the
artwork the students will use of a variety of lines, colors, and basic geometric
shapes and patterns to creatively express feelings and personal experiences, we
will be able to see if students recognize that art can be created for self-expression
or fun, students will describe a personal artwork to a classmate or us, and
students will identify and discuss art in their own environment.

Instructional Activities & Strategies

ENGAGE: We will engage students by allowing them to analyze art that they see on a daily basis using the
book Alphabet City by Stephen T. Johnson. We will choose several pages and ask students what they can
see in the image and if they notice anything special about the images.

BUILD: We will build students knowledge by discussing capital and lower-case letters, identifying
letters in their names, how to write a sentence, and analyzing environmental art.

APPLY: Students will use the block letter that begins with the first letter of their name to draw different
images that they enjoy or that describe them. Once they are finished, students will write a sentence
describing how the big letter fits in their name. If students finish early, they can share their artwork with a
classmate, continue coloring, or create another piece of art with the remaining letters in their name or last
initial. They may also write sentences describing all of the images they included in the inside of the letter.

.
REFLECT: This project is meaningful to our students because it allows them to think outside of the
box. Students will be able to gather knowledge that they already have to create art that includes items
that enjoy or that describe them as a person. Students will write a sentence at the bottom of the page
that describes how the letter is involved in their name. They will also be able to learn more about their
classmates.
