Reading Groups WK 2

Lesson title: Reading Groups Visualising. Curriculum:


Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning to

Read different types of texts by combining contextual , semantic,
grammatical and phonic knowledge using text processing strategies for
example monitoring meaning, cross checking and reviewing (ACELY1691)

Considerations for diversity (extension/alteration):


Groups Red and Green: Will work with Mr Brown.
Groups Blue and Yellow will be doing other rotation during this lesson.
The diversity will be in relation to the books the students will be using
during the lesson on prediction.

(Purpose and learning outcomes)
Aim of the lesson: Students will understand what Visualising is and how to visualise prior to and when reading a
text.

Resources: Whiteboard, Markers. Yellow book Extinct Animals, Blue book Extinct and Endangered Animals, pencils and
rubbers, prediction flowchart.

Introduction: (5min)
Introduce myself and set the expectations, regarding behaviour.
Transition students from their desks to the groups around the classroom
Yellow on the floor with me,
Mac Lit with Mrs Negrie,
Green Spelling with Mrs Hegarty,
Red Comprehension with Mrs Hume,
Blue independent work/on the floor with the teacher.
Use countdown from 5 to get the students into position ready for learning.

Body:
(30mins)
Group 1 Yellow Recap The teacher will advise the students this is a continuation on visualising prior to and when reading a
text.
Teacher - Recap riding the waves of success chart near the floor and how students get to each section.
Teacher - Go over the visualising card with the students.
Teacher Today we are going to use a text and discuss how you visualise a text.
Teacher Hand out the texts and senses chart copies. Advise students the senses chart is designed to encourage students to
think about how text can stimulate all the five senses. It could also be a way of activating prior knowledge for a topic.
Teacher Yellow group you will be reading Extinct Animals. Students will read the text aloud in turns, teacher will follow.
Students Will look at the pictures and what they are reading to visualise what is going on in the story.
Teacher Advise the students to create a mental image in their head of the story using their five senses as they read aloud.
Teacher At the completion of the story, write the title of the topic in the square in the centre. Working together, students,
along with the teachers direction will complete each of the heading, relating them back to the story. They will only require a
couple of words for each area.
Teacher to students Glue their senses chart into their books, and get ready for the next rotation.

Group 2 Blue This is a continuation from the previous lesson on visualising when reading a text.
Recap riding the waves of success chart near the floor and how students get to each section.
Teacher Blue group you will be reading Do tigers have nine lives. Recap the senses card with students.
Teacher Today students will work independently to complete the senses chart, whilst reading the book Do tigers have nine
lives.
Teacher Hand out the texts and senses chart copies. Advise students the senses chart is designed to encourage students to
think about how text can stimulate all the five senses the same as last week.
Teacher At the completion of the story, write the title of the topic in the square in the centre. Working individually, students,
will complete each of the heading, relating them back to the story. They will try and fill in the boxes with as many words they
can for each sense they discovered when reading the text. If books are shared, teacher will need to ensure students of the
same ability read together.
Students Will report back to the teacher the information they discovered.
Teacher to students Glue their senses chart into their books, and get ready for the next lesson.

Conclusion:
Group 1 Yellow - Recap the lesson on visualising glue prediction senses chart in their books.
Group 2 Blue recap the lesson on visualising glue senses chart in their books.

Assessment:
Formative observations of the students work in completing the senses chart.

Follow up lesson:
The next lesson will be again on visualising; however, a new text will be used, with the senses chart.
