Horizon Curriculum Newsletter

The Horizon curriculum develops a wide range of skills that supports us to broaden our
knowledge and understanding of the world around us; preparing us for the future.

At Phoenix, we have had a really successful journey through our new Horizon curriculum during the Spring
term. Children have already explored what skills are needed to be theologists, scientists, mathematicians,
poets and authors over the last 8 weeks. Children at Phoenix have gained a broader understanding of these
curriculum areas through themed weeks and investigative tasks set up to aid their exploration of new topics.

From our theme of flight for Book Week and the Great balloon race with a balloon landing in the Netherlands,
children at Phoenix have really enjoyed becoming writers. We have submitted poetry entries to Young
Writers too during our We are Poets unit and are looking forward to find out if we have any published
writers at Phoenix!

During maths week, children had the opportunity to investigate mathematical problems and entered problem
solving competitions with winners being announced in celebration assembly. We loved reading the story
Math Curse by Jon Scieszka and using this to write our own stories.

Finally, pupils have been learning all about different religions from around the world and all took part in our
Hinduism workshop last half term. Children were able to investigate fertile questions relating to particular
religions; from sacred pilgrimages to Hajj in Islam to the perception of charity in Sikhism, children at Phoenix
have been broadening their horizons throughout their learning in Spring term.

We are Culturalists

Next week, we will be starting our new We are Culturalists unit

where children will be finding out lots about different countries.
They will be using the skills that they have developed as
geographers, historians and theologists to find out how cultures and
traditions shape a country. Each year group will be listening to and
reading traditional stories from their country and using this to find
out all about the customs and traditions of each nation. We have
already started with our Bollywood dance workshop this week!
