McKinney, TX, March 7, 2017 Today Collin County Judge Keith Self announced the formation of an
exploratory committee to consider a possible campaign for Texas 3rd Congressional District in the 2018
primary election.
It was government overreach that spurred me to run for county judge more than a decade ago, said
Self. Today, many of the troubles facing Americans stem from the growth of the federal government
and its extended reach into their everyday lives.
The task set before the committee is to consider how Selfs twenty-five years as an Army officer and a
decade as county judge could serve as a lens through which wide-ranging national issues could be
addressed.
As foreign affairs and national defense news dominates headlines daily, the committee will consider
how my work at the Pentagon and a decade overseas in tactical units, NATO military headquarters, and
a U.S. embassy can offer real solutions to seemingly intractable national defense issues.
Self took office as county judge in 2007. Since then, he and his colleagues on the Commissioners Court
reduced the county tax rate six times, instituted a homestead exemption, and enacted the lowest
property tax rate among all 254 counties in Texas.
State law requires that Self resign his current position as County Judge should he decide to announce a
formal campaign for Congress.
Addressing that requirement, Self added, While I chafe at laws unequally applied to local elected
officials but not state-level elected officials, I accept the constraint and will faithfully abide by it.
