Serial Working Day Report

1. Thursday, Today was my first day of training. I met my project
1st July manager, Mr. Pankaj Virmani. I was allotted the Switch
Hardware department under the aegis of Mr. Manohar Singh.
My project guide was Mr. Yogesh Garg (Assistant Manager).
He took me on a tour of the training area to make me familiar
with the surroundings. I ended my first day of training with a
basic knowledge of the workplace and my seniors.
2. Friday, Today I was given a brief introduction of my department and
2nd July its position within the organizational hierarchy. I was given a
brief description of the various hardware components
involved in the working of Airtel’s GSM network, such as
GMSC, MSC, BSC, etc.

1. Monday, Today I met my fellow trainees who will work with me in my
5th July department during the coming months. Both of them hail
from Chandigarh and are students of Rayat Institute of
Engineering & Information Technology.
2. Tuesday, Today I was handed over various manuals pertaining to the
6th July various hardware components used within Airtel’s GSM
network.
3. Wednesday, I was advised by our project guide to keep studying the
7th July manuals for at least a week before I began doing any serious
work. This is because he told us that I would find it hard to
understand the working of the system without understanding
the concepts.

4. Thursday, Today I was taken to the POI (Point of Intersection) room
15th July and were explained the various hardware present there and its
function within the network.
5. Friday, Today I was again taken to the POI room but this time was
16th July asked to answer questions about the hardware to clarify
various basic concepts. Following this, I was given a brief
overview of the various tools used in maintaining the
hardware in the POI room.

1. Monday, Today was the first day when I actually got to do any serious
19th July work. I was asked to do loop checking for a faulty link
between Mohali and Airtel Jalandhar.
2. Tuesday, I was assigned the duty to do loop checking for a major fault
20th July existing in the link between Airtel and Connect (HFCL). I
spent the rest of the day going through the manuals.
3. Wednesday, Today we were given a brief overview of the various
21st July softwares used for troubleshooting of faulty links. These
were WinFiol and Citrix Neighbourhood Networking (by Sun
Microsystems).
4. Thursday, Today we were assigned the duty of collecting the details like
22nd July serial number, name, type and revision number of the various
cards present in all the cabinets in the switch hardware room.
We were further given the format in which we had to submit
the findings to Mr. Yogesh Garg and were given a dead line
for the same.
5. Friday, We resumed with the same work given to us yesterday.

1. Monday, 26h July Same as previous day.
2. Tuesday, 27th July Same as previous day.
3. Wednesday, 28th Today we were asked to come to the office during the night
July shift to assist in laying E1s under the false flooring. These
E1s were laid to provide connectivity for the new RBSC
setup in Punjab.

4. Thursday, 29 Reached home morning at 7:00 am. Today also we were
July asked to come back during the night shift for the
continuation of the same work as last night.
5. Friday, 30th July Today we resumed the documentation of the network cards.

1. Monday, Today we were told to lay some more E1s after which we
2nd August were taught how to perform the wrapping of the E1s on the
Digital Distribution Frames (DDF). Rest of the day we
continued on with the wrapping procedure on the DDF.
2. Tuesday, Today there was a major fault in the link between Mohali
3rd August MSC and Jaipur MSC. We assisted Mr. Manohar Singh in
the fault detection and rectification procedures.
3. Wednesday, We continued with the trouble shooting of the Jaipur link
4th August followed by loop testing of the same before the fault was
eventually rectified.
4. Thursday, Today we were introduced to a new procedure of attaching
5th August the E1s to the GMSC DDF from the RBSC DDF, called
Punching. We were asked to practice a little bit of
Punching of the E1s on an empty DDF.
5. Friday, Today we resumed the documentation of the network cards.

1. Monday, Some senior Reliance engineers came to Airtel for adding a
9th August few network paths to increase the total number of subscribers
supported between the Airtel-Reliance network at a given
instant. We spent the entire day assisting them with their
work.
2. Tuesday, Today we discovered that one of the network cards was burnt
10th August which was causing network congestion due to which a lots of
subscribers were facing problems in making and receiving
calls. Finally the card was extracted from the cabinet and
replaced with a new card.
3. Wednesday, Today we did some regular some regular loop checking
11th August followed by laying of a few E1s for the Jalandhar link to
increase the capacity.
4. Thursday, Today we resumed our network card documentation and
12th August towards the end of the day punched a few E1s for a new link
that had recently been setup.
5. Friday, Today we were taken to the new building where we assisted a
13th August few other engineers in setting up the hardware required for
the expansion of the GMSC and MSC.

1. Monday, Today we were involved in setting up new links for an RBSC
16th August that had come up in Punjab. This required laying some E1s
followed by punching and wrapping.
2. Tuesday, Today we continued with our project of network card
17th August documentation. Mid-way through the day, we were asked to
assist in troubleshooting some faulty links within the Airtel
network that were eventually traced to some faulty u-links in
the concerned DDF.
3. Wednesday, Today we continued with the routine health check using
18th August WinFiol followed by documentation of network cards, ending
the day by performing loop checking of the Jaipur link.
4. Thursday, There was not much work to do today since our sir was on
19th August leave. We spent the entire day reading the manuals and went
home slightly earlier than usual.
5. Friday, Our sir was on leave today as well, but we nevertheless
20th August continued with our project of network card documentation,
followed by a brief session with one of the other senior
engineers, who helped us better grasp the concepts given in the
manuals.

1. Monday, Today we continued with the routine health check using
23rd August WinFiol followed by documentation of network cards.
2. Tuesday, Today we learnt that Hutch was to setup a few more hardware
24th August components to increase its network capacity. A few engineers
from Hutch had come over for the same purpose. We had to
assist them in laying a few E1s. Thereafter, we proceeded to
complete our project of network card documentation and gave
it the finishing touches.
3. Wednesday, Today we submitted our project to Mr. Yogesh Garg. He had
25th August a look at it and pointed out a few areas where we could make
some improvements. We were told to keep updating the
project on a regular basis since the addition, deletion and
replacement of network cards takes place on a regular basis.
4. Thursday, Today we were taught a few commands of WinFiol along
26th August with their purpose. We were further asked some questions
related to what we had learnt during the training so far. We
were further asked to create 30 new links by using all the
procedures we had been taught over the duration of our
training so far.
5. Friday, Today we were asked to come in the night shift since the
27th August work we were supposed to do was sensitive and working at
night would avoid the perils associated with working during
the day. At night we did troubleshooting of a few links and
replaced a few hardware components.

1. Monday, Today we worked on setting up the hardware in the new
30th August building. That involved connecting the DDFs of the GMSC
with those of the RBSCs.
2. Tuesday, We spent the entire day today laying a large number of E1s for
31st August expanding the network capacity within the Punjab circle.
3. Wednesday, Today we were introduced to a new hardware component used
1st September in the DDFs used to connect TRC with other network elements.
These are called baluns. We were guided on how to make a
balun and also explained the working principle of a balun. This
was followed by a practice session of balun making supervised
by Mr. Manohar Singh.
4. Thursday, Today we were asked to assist in troubleshooting a link. This
2nd September involved tracing the fault the concerned component that
happened to be a faulty balun, and then taking the necessary
steps to sort the problem while causing no adverse effect to any
other links.
5. Friday, Today we continued with the routine health check using
3rd September WinFiol followed by documentation of network cards.

1. Monday, Today there was relatively less work to do as compared to the
6th September recent past. We spent majority of the day reading manuals.
Only towards the end of the day were we told to check the
status of a few E1s via loop checking.
2. Tuesday, I took a leave from office today since I had to appear for my
7th September preliminary SSB interview for the army at the Territorial Army
Headquarters (WQ) in Sector 8, Chandigarh.
3. Wednesday, Today involved wrapping and punching all the E1s that we had
8th September laid yesterday. During the latter half of the day, however, it
came to our notice that the wrapping order was to be changed.
This was since the numbering that had been done on the other
end of the link was different from our own. Thus, we had to
rearrange the wrapping of the E1s.
4. Thursday, We spent the majority of the day today noting down network
9th September card details of some new cards that had arrived. The rest of the
day was spent updating our project.
5. Friday, Today we worked on setting up the hardware in the new
10th September building. That involved connecting the DDFs of the GMSC
with those of the RBSCs.

1. Monday, The whole of today was spent in laying a large number of E1s
13th September for capacity expansion.
2. Tuesday, Today we were again involved in setting up the hardware in
14th September the new building. This was followed by checking a few links
in the main building and learning more about WinFiol.
3. Wednesday, Today we tried to recap all we have learnt during our training
15th September so far. Also, we assisted our sir in setting up a new link for
Ludhiana, followed by checking of the same for verification
of the fact that it had been setup properly.
4. Thursday, We spent the initial part of the day updating our project.
16th September During the latter half of the day, we once again proceeded to
the new building for setting up the hardware, followed by
troubleshooting of a BSNL Chandigarh link.
5. Friday, Once again we spent the majority of the day looking through
17th September the manuals because of low work load. The rest of the time
was spent updating our project.

1. Monday, Today we remained busy in uprooting a few redundant E1s.
20th September This was not an easy task considering the amount of cabling
present. The cables to be extracted were at the absolute
bottom of the heap and took a great deal of effort to extract.
2. Tuesday, Today was a regular day when we spent most of our time
21st September learning new stuff by reading the manuals and also through
discussions with Manohar sir.
3. Wednesday, Today we were involved in setting up new links for
22nd September connectivity with Hutch and also some other links for
connectivity with BSNL.
4. Thursday, Today we spent our time working out a problem that had
23rd September occurred with a few of the links we had setup yesterday. It
turned out that a few of the faulty links were so because of
wrong wrapping while others were out of order due to some
faulty baluns.
5. Friday, We spent today updating our project followed by the regular
24th September health check of all the digital paths. A few of the links turned
out to have problems that had to be sorted out. This we were
able to do with the help of our sir, although a few links still
remain plagued by some problem that we haven’t been able to
figure out or trace.

1. Monday, Today we were supposed to help our sir in adding a few links
27th September for capacity expansion. Apart from that, we also had to take
part in the setting up the hardware in the new building.
2. Tuesday, Today we continued yesterday’s work of setting up hardware
28th September in the new building. This was followed by laying a few E1s in
the main building for interconnectivity with Hutch.
3. Wednesday, A team of engineers from Reliance Infocomm had come over
29th September to Airtel for capacity expansion. We, as before, assisted them
with anything that they needed done from our side, including
laying a few E1s and attaching them to our side of the switch.
4. Thursday, The workload was low today, so we did not do a lot of work.
30th September We instead took the opportunity to discuss a few things with
some of the other trainees, such as the work they do in their
department and we explained our work to them. Later during
the day we spent some time with Manohar sir, learning about
WinFiol and Citrix.
5. Friday, We spent the majority of the day today noting down network
1st October card details of some new cards that had arrived. The rest of
the day was spent updating our project.

1. Monday, We were busy the entire day today in laying E1s for network
4th October capacity expansion. We also had to lay a few E1s in the new
building for providing enhanced capacity between Mohali and
Jaipur. A BSNL link also had to be checked.
2. Tuesday, The BSNL link that was checked yesterday developed another
5th October problem today. A thorough examination ensued. We had to
check and double-check all hardware components involved.
After doing all that, loop testing was performed to confirm the
correctness of all connections. It was eventually found that the
fault lay within the BSNL switch.
3. Wednesday, Today was a very busy day involving laying of more E1s,
6th October loop testing, and routine health checks of the switch
hardware. We continued with updating our project followed
by studying the manuals and discussing some queries with
Manohar sir.
4. Thursday, Yesterday’s hectic schedule continued today with laying of
7th October another set of E1s, followed by confirming their functionality
and solving a problem that had occurred in one of the GMSC
DDFs that was later traced to a loose connection.
5. Friday, Today we were given a brief overview of the functions of
8th October some of the network cards on which our project has been
focusing on. After that, we were given tutorial on how to
attach a coaxial cable to a u-link in a DDF. What followed
were several practice sessions under the watchful eye of
Manohar sir.

1. Monday, Today we were assigned the duty of identifying the location
11th October of a particular faulty link within the switch and following it
up with finding out the exact cause of the problem and then, if
possible sorting it out as well. Although we did manage to
find the location of the fault, we were unable to diagnose it’s
exact cause. However, Manohar sir helped us out and pointed
out the techniques that are used in problem identification.
2. Tuesday, Today we remained busy with troubleshooting a Ropar link
12th October that had developed some problem. The fault was located to a
broken wire on the DDF where wrapping is done. The latter
half of the day was spent in updating our project.
3. Wednesday, Today we were involved in shifting some stuff from the main
13th October building into the new building. Also, some of the latest
hardware had to be setup in the new building, which is where
we spent most of our time during the day, returning to the old
building only for lunch.
4. Thursday, Today was another day with relatively lighter workload. We
14th October only had to lay a few E1s in the main building and finish off
that job by wrapping and patching the two ends of all the E1s
in their allotted slots.
5. Friday, For most of the day today, we were occupied with updating
15th October our project, followed by a small discussion session with
Manohar sir, regarding all the things we had learnt so far and
some additional information about the working of the
hardware in the switch department.

1. Monday, A day that was characterized by the marked absence of work,
18th October for some unknown reason. Anyway, we were glad to have
gotten a day off. We simply went through the manuals and
concentrated on testing the knowledge we had acquired so far
by asking each other questions related to our work.
2. Tuesday, Today we continued with our most general routine of regular
19th October health checks followed by a session with Manohar sir
concerning the various transmission protocols and techniques
followed in the GSM network. The day ended with by
providing Yogesh sir a regular update on the network card
documentation project.
3. Wednesday, We were involved in a major expansion project today. It
20th October involved laying a large number of E1s in the new building
followed by wrapping and punching both ends of each E1 on
its respective DDF.
4. Thursday, Today we continued to update and refine our project. Some
21st October new cards had arrived in the new building. We had to make a
list of all those cards including their names, revision numbers,
quantity, etc. and furthermore store them order wise in the
allotted cupboards.
5. Friday, Today once again, the workload was relatively low, so we
22nd October went through the manuals for the former half of the day. For
the latter half of the day, we took an early leave from the
office after duly seeking permission from both Manohar sir
and Yogesh sir.

1. Monday, Today we were again involved in a project requiring
25th October expansion of network capacity that was achieved was the
laying of a large number of E1s. This was followed by their
punching and wrapping in the allotted slots in the DDF.
2. Tuesday, Today we laid a large number of coaxial cables to be
26th October connected to the TRC DDF from the MSC. These links were
completed after duly attaching the coaxial cables to their
respective u-links on the DDF.
3. Wednesday, We spent the majority of the day today noting down network
27th October card details of some new cards that had arrived. The rest of
the day was spent updating our project.
4. Thursday, Today we continued with our project of network card
28th October documentation. Later, we had to assist in troubleshooting
some faulty links within the Airtel network.
5. Friday, Today was a regular day at the office during which we
29th October performed the regular health check of the hardware, followed
by continuation of setting up hardware in the new block. This
preceded the addition of a lone link, for the GPRS node, in the
main building.

1. Monday, I did not go to office today since I wasn’t feeling well. Went
1st November to the doctor who diagnosed me with a bad case of stomach
upset.
2. Tuesday, I did not go to office today either because of the
2nd November aforementioned condition.

1. Monday, I went to office after one week today. We laid 15 E1s for the
8th November Jalandhar link whose capacity was being expanded. These
were laid in the new building. Afterwards, the connections
were completed by performing the operations of wrapping
and punching.
2. Tuesday, Today was a very busy day involving laying of more E1s,
9th November loop testing, and routine health checks of the switch
hardware.
3. Wednesday, Today’s schedule continued to be hectic with laying of
10th November another set of E1s, followed by confirming their functionality.
4. Thursday, Today turned out to be just another day at the office. We laid
11th November a few more E1s, did their checking, and proceeded to make
those links active. This was followed by updating our
documentation project.
5. Friday, Today there was hardly any work to be done in the office. We
12th November updated our project and went through the manuals once again
to revise the basics once again.

1. Monday, Today there was a small amount of work to be done regarding
15th November loop checking of the Jammu links and a few minor problems
that required some troubleshooting. The problems were
eventually traced to a broken piece of patching on one of the
DDFs.
2. Tuesday, A lot of new equipment had arrived in the new building for
16th November installation. That is where we spent the entire day, sorting out
various components and creating detailed lists of the type and
quantity of all types of equipment.
3. Wednesday, The previous day’s work was too much to be completed in a
17th November single day, so it spilled over to today as well. We kept doing
the same things we did yesterday.
4. Thursday, After completing the documentation of the new equipment
18th November yesterday, we set about the task of setting up the essential
components. Further, a few E1s had to be laid within the
premises to be connected from one of the GMSCs to one of
the TRCs.
5. Friday, Today we continued the same work that we have been doing
19th November for the past few days. We finished it today and the hardware
that has been setup is now up and running.

1. Monday, Today we once again refreshed our knowledge of the GSM
22nd November system by once again going through the manuals. Manohar sir
asked us questions about all we have learnt by now.
Thankfully, we were able to answer almost all of his queries
to his satisfaction.
2. Tuesday, Today we worked in the main building. We had to lay 12 E1s
23rd November for the new Jalandhar link and 5 E1s for expansion of the
Moga link.
3. Wednesday, Today once again we continued work on laying E1s for
24th November network capacity expansion. This was followed by
verification of link status, i.e. whether active or down.
4. Thursday, The links that had been created in the past few days were
25th November thoroughly checked for any faults. A few did come up, so we
got down to sorting them out. None of them turned out to
anything too major. A minor rectification of a loose u-link in
one of the DDFs proved to be sufficient to get the link online.
5. Friday, Today we continued the same work that we have been doing
26th November for the past few days, i.e. setting up of new links followed by
their troubleshooting.

1. Monday, Today we had to change the baluns in the DDF for the Airtel
29th November call centre Competent link. This link is one of the important
links because this link is carrying all the subscribers trying to
reach the customer care. The faulty balun was detected and
replaced from the DDF.
2. Tuesday, We found a DIP which was down since past 3 days and went
30th November unnoticed due to which there was some congestion going on
since the past 3 days. The dip was detected and then fault
rectification was done.
3. Wednesday, Today we were asked to come during the night shift and lay
1st December some E1s for the Jammu link.
4. Thursday, Today again we were asked to come during the night shift for
2nd December the expansion of the Jammu node.
5. Friday, The leftover work of patching was done during day time on
3rd December the E1s laid for the Jammu node.

1. Monday, Today some engineers from Hutch had come over for the fault
6th December rectification in their hardware. We observed them when they
were rectifying the fault in their hardware.
2. Tuesday, Today we were told to go to the new building for the laying of
7th December the E1s for the expansion of the GMSC. The rest of the day
was consumed in the wrapping and the patching of the E1s on
the DDFs.
3. Wednesday, Today we were told to asked to come during the night shift to
8th December observe some engineers from Di-Tech company and know
more about the Filters and the noise cutting capability.
4. Thursday, Today we were told to take a day off as there were no alarms
9th December and no work to be done.
5. Friday, Today also we were told to take a day off.

1. Monday, Today we again updated the information of the network cards
13th December and submitted the updated report.
2. Tuesday, Today we laid 35 E1s for the Jammu link and then the rest of
14th December the day was spent patching and punching the E1s on the
DDFs.

3. Wednesday, We patched some those 35 baluns for the Jammu link hence
15th December increasing the subscriber base capacity by 35*32 channels.
4. Thursday, Today some engineers from BSNL had come for expansion of
16th December the channel carrying capacity.
5. Friday, Today we were asked to come during the nioght shift to assist
17th December and observe the engineers from Di-Tech who are responsible
for the installation of the equipment for cutting down the
signal to noise ratio in the channels hence providing more
bandwidth for the subscribers and hence increasing the
channel capacity.

1. Monday, Again a lot of new equipment had come in from Sun
20th December Microsystems which was to be installed in the new building to
expand the capacity for the subscribers to subscribe for the
new service known as HELLO TUNES.
2. Tuesday, Yesterdays work was carried out today also as the equipment
21st December which had arrived was in large number.
3. Wednesday, The same work was carried out today also and finally the
22nd December work finished off by 9:30 pm.
4. Thursday, We were told by our mentor that today and tomorrow will be
23rd December a holiday us.
5. Friday, Today was also a holiday.

1. Monday, We started work for our project report with guidance and
27th December knowledge from Mr. Manohar which is to be submitted to the
college.
2. Tuesday, Today also we continued on with the work of making our
28th December project report to be submitted to the college.
3. Wednesday, We took the day off to work on our project report.
29th December
4. Thursday, Finally today we submitted our documentation project on the
30th December network cards in its final form
5. Friday, Today we were busy getting all our necessary document
31st December signed from our various supervisors and thanked them for
providing us the necessary guidance and support
