IMMUNOHISTOKYMIC STUDY
It is a study that serves to mark the tissues in order to be able to define to what
type of tumor corresponds a tissue. It uses the principle of the antigen-antibody
reaction, which is very specific.
The market has a wide range of probes (antibodies) to detect parts of cells or other
particles (antigens) and thereby improve the diagnosis performed with current
techniques.
The process involves placing a histological section of the tissue under study with a
probe that recognizes the antigen and attaches to it. Then we reveal the reaction
with a substance called chromogen, which gives a specific color to the tissue and
we can recognize it under a microscope.
These markers also serve to study the ability to respond to hormones or other
treatments, which is very useful in the treatment of breast and prostate cancer.
Finally, specific drugs are now available against an antigen that is in the
constitution of the tumor. If this antigen is detected in the patient's tissue, the drug
that attacks tumor cells can be administered in a specific way, improving the
chances of response to treatment.
WHAT IS IT FOR
To define the type of malignant tumor, classifying it according to the expression of
markers it has and to see if a tumor expresses a tumor or hormonal marker, that
has a prognostic or therapeutic repercussion.
This study is indicated by the anatomic pathologist responsible for tissue study, not
the patient's treating physician.
