Sulleyona and Mikleigh, residents of Monstropolis, were walking to class one day when they broke out
into an argument

Question 1

Im not round! said Mikleigh. I just have a higher gravitational potential at the same height, thats all.
Sulleyona sighed. She knew that Mikleigh was referring to her higher

(a) volume.
(b) gravitational field.
(c) work.
(d) weight.

Question 2

Anyway, its not like I could change planets if I could Mikleigh wispily thought to herself. I mean, if I
went to Fizzistropolis, I would weigh twice as much, wouldnt I?
Sulleyona listened without comment. She picked up a stone and skimmed it across playfair pool. On
Fizzistropolis, the same stone thrown with the same horizontal velocity would

(a) stay in the air for less time and fall with a shorter range.
(b) stay in the air the same length of time but have less range.
(c) stay in the air the same length of time but have greater range.
(d) stay in the air for a greater amount of time and have a greater range.

Question 3

They arrived at Mr. Bronnerneuss class where he was currently launching eggs into the air using an air
pump and water bottle. Some of the eggs were hatching on launch and some very green-looking chicks
were being pinned down to their eggs due to the force of the launch. If Mr. Bronnerneus was being nice to
the chicks, he would be launching

(a) at 3g and using soft cushions underneath the eggs.

(b) at 3g and using hard plastic underneath the eggs.
(c) at 10g and using soft cushions underneath the eggs.
(d) at 10g and using hard plastic underneath the eggs.

Question 4

A few of the eggs were making it successfully into orbit (Mr. Bronnerneus was using a really big air
pump). If the orbital velocity of an egg was 1.4 X 104 m/s, and the radius of the planet was 5.6 X 106 m
with a value of gravity at the orbital altitude of 7.8 ms-2, then the altitude of the egg was

(a) 5.8 X 105 m

(b) 4.8 X 106 m
(c) 3.6 X 107 m
(d) 2.4 X 108 m

(d) needs to have really great heat shields and boundary-layer-breaker-uperers.

Question 6

The site where Mr. Bronnerneus teaches is Monstropoliss main centre for Fizzistropolis Research, where
they extract vital brain waves from stranded Fizzistropolians to power their civilization. Sulleyona and
Mikleigh were an extraction team that was about to break the long-standing brain wave extraction record.

The current model of brain wave transmission is the aether model. One way to test this model is to

(a) attempt to observe interference patterns in one wave split by different paths and recombined.
(b) use thought experiments to transmit waves between two inertial frames of reference.
(c) use thought experiments to transmit waves between an inertial and non-inertial frame of
reference.

Celiah Weliah was the all important co-ordinator of the Fizzistropolis Research Centre, and incidentally
Mikleighs friend. It was also her birthday. Celiah was 20 years old although she was born 30 years
before. She had an accident with a spaceship that got a little too close to light-speed. The speed her
spacecraft achieved was

(a) 2.3 X 108 m/s

(b) 2.9 X 108 m/s

(a) electron gun.

(b) electrostatic deflector.
(c) magnetic deflector.
(d) image mask.

4- -
Question 9

Mikleigh greeted Celiah Weliah. Sulleyona did too. Mikleigh hit the the CRT to get it working but the

and Celiah Weliah would have seen on screen would have

(a) instantly gone blank.

(b) shown fewer and fewer stripy lines before going blank.
(c) reduced to lines both horizontally and vertically before disappearing as a single dot in the
middle of the screen.
(d) distorted in a weird way and then gone blank.

Question 10

As the CRT died, sparks started to arc across the remnants of the
machine. Celiah Weliah was quite shocked by the experience, as
shown in the image on the right. The arcing was caused by

(a) black-body radiation.

(b) the photo-electric effect.
(c) quantised light.
(d) non-quantised light.

Question 11

A device inside the dead CRT was known as a monstrositor. It can be represented diagrammatically as

(b) requires a voltage of 1.4V between 1 and 3 to operate, assuming it is made primarily of
silicon.
(c) can act as a switch if the current at 3 is turned on or off.
(d) uses little power to amplify a signal.

5- -
Question 12

Question 13

Part of the reason for the power shortage in Monstropolis, aside from the lack of Fizzistropolians, is the
loss of power in transmission lines. If high current transmission lines were made of yttrium-barium-copper
oxide (-form) cooled in a liquid nitrogen jacket, then

(a) there would still be significant energy loss as heat.

(b) there would reduced energy loss as heat.
(c) there would be no energy loss as heat.
(d) energy would be lost as other forms besides heat.

Question 14

Pheoboo, meanwhile, had extricated herself from the remains of her spacecraft and wandered into the
grounds of the Fizzistropolis Research Centre and hitched a ride on a maglev train. The maglev train
works by

(a) using the Meissner effect to reflect magnetic field off a current in the monorail of the train.
(b) cooling a superconductor below the critical point and repelling the external magnetic field
of the current in the monorail of the train.
(c) both of the above.
(d) none of the above.

Gravitation in understanding and calculating the motion of
satellites. 3

End of Exam Check your answers.

Epilogue
Mr. Bronnerneus encountered many very angry chickonauts who had overcome their vertigo. He was last
seen being mobbed by lots of yellow, feathery creatures in low Monstropolis orbit. Phoeboo made it back
to Fizzistropolis and is researching a warp drive-capable, happy thought-driven tricycle. Celiah Weliah
took over the Fizzistropolis Research Centre and now powers Monstropolis on happy thoughts. Sulleyona
and Mikleigh never broke the long-standing brain wave extraction record Mikleigh bought a new car but
thats another story (on Disc 2)
