Sulleyona and Mikleigh, residents of Monstropolis, were walking to class one day when they broke out
into an argument
Question 1
Im not round! said Mikleigh. I just have a higher gravitational potential at the same height, thats all.
Sulleyona sighed. She knew that Mikleigh was referring to her higher
(a) volume.
(b) gravitational field.
(c) work.
(d) weight.
Question 2
Anyway, its not like I could change planets if I could Mikleigh wispily thought to herself. I mean, if I
went to Fizzistropolis, I would weigh twice as much, wouldnt I?
Sulleyona listened without comment. She picked up a stone and skimmed it across playfair pool. On
Fizzistropolis, the same stone thrown with the same horizontal velocity would
(a) stay in the air for less time and fall with a shorter range.
(b) stay in the air the same length of time but have less range.
(c) stay in the air the same length of time but have greater range.
(d) stay in the air for a greater amount of time and have a greater range.
Question 3
They arrived at Mr. Bronnerneuss class where he was currently launching eggs into the air using an air
pump and water bottle. Some of the eggs were hatching on launch and some very green-looking chicks
were being pinned down to their eggs due to the force of the launch. If Mr. Bronnerneus was being nice to
the chicks, he would be launching
Question 4
A few of the eggs were making it successfully into orbit (Mr. Bronnerneus was using a really big air
pump). If the orbital velocity of an egg was 1.4 X 104 m/s, and the radius of the planet was 5.6 X 106 m
with a value of gravity at the orbital altitude of 7.8 ms-2, then the altitude of the egg was
Disclaimer: no actual chicks (or any other living thing, except the trees that gave their lives for this
paper) were harmed in any (permanent) way in the writing of this exam.

Question 5
One of the chickonauts accidentally crashed into an alien spaceship from Fizzistropolis, currently occupied
by Pheoboo. Pheoboos craft plunged into the atmosphere of Monstropolis. For Pheoboo to arrive safely
to the ground, her craft
Question 6
The site where Mr. Bronnerneus teaches is Monstropoliss main centre for Fizzistropolis Research, where
they extract vital brain waves from stranded Fizzistropolians to power their civilization. Sulleyona and
Mikleigh were an extraction team that was about to break the long-standing brain wave extraction record.
The current model of brain wave transmission is the aether model. One way to test this model is to
(a) attempt to observe interference patterns in one wave split by different paths and recombined.
(b) use thought experiments to transmit waves between two inertial frames of reference.
(c) use thought experiments to transmit waves between an inertial and non-inertial frame of
reference.
(d) use thought experiments to transmit waves between two non-inertial frames of reference.
Question 7
Celiah Weliah was the all important co-ordinator of the Fizzistropolis Research Centre, and incidentally
Mikleighs friend. It was also her birthday. Celiah was 20 years old although she was born 30 years
before. She had an accident with a spaceship that got a little too close to light-speed. The speed her
spacecraft achieved was
Question 8
In front of Celiah Weliah was a device known to Earthlings as a Cathode Ray Tube. Celiah Weliah was
currently watching a brain wave extraction simulation on the tube. Suddenly the image on screen became
significantly less intense. This problem is due to a malfunctioning

Question 9
Mikleigh greeted Celiah Weliah. Sulleyona did too. Mikleigh hit the the CRT to get it working but the
sound of air hissing filled the room. She had broken the picture tube! The image that Mikleigh, Sulleyona
and Celiah Weliah would have seen on screen would have
Question 10
As the CRT died, sparks started to arc across the remnants of the
machine. Celiah Weliah was quite shocked by the experience, as
shown in the image on the right. The arcing was caused by

Question 13
Part of the reason for the power shortage in Monstropolis, aside from the lack of Fizzistropolians, is the
loss of power in transmission lines. If high current transmission lines were made of yttrium-barium-copper
oxide (-form) cooled in a liquid nitrogen jacket, then
Question 14
Pheoboo, meanwhile, had extricated herself from the remains of her spacecraft and wandered into the
grounds of the Fizzistropolis Research Centre and hitched a ride on a maglev train. The maglev train
works by
(a) using the Meissner effect to reflect magnetic field off a current in the monorail of the train.
(b) cooling a superconductor below the critical point and repelling the external magnetic field
of the current in the monorail of the train.
(c) both of the above.
(d) none of the above.
Question 15
At the end of the maglev line, Phoeboo climbed out and snuck into Mr. Bronnerneuss classroom while he
was out. Phoeboo sent an emergency message back to Fizzistropolis using some equipment she found in
the room. If she was broadcasting using a laser of wavelength 302 nm, then the energy of each photon is

Question 19 (7 marks) Marks
After a ride on her vehicle, Phoeboo, Sulleyona and Mikleigh ran for the intergalactic launch centre, a rail
gun that shoots payloads out to a geosynchronous orbit where they rendezvous with a spacecraft that
travels at relativistic speeds. Unfortunately Mr. Bronnerneus observed the trio make their getaway he
wanted the Fizzistropolian for his Machiavellian plans! Celiah Weliah also saw the threesome and gave
chase after Mr. Bronnerneus.
Mikleigh, Sulleyona and Phoeboo ran across some nylon carpet and got electrically charged up. They then
ran into a room where there were crossed electric and magnetic fields as shown below. The voltage on the
electric plates was 17 000 V and the plates were separated by 3 metres and the magnetic field strength was

(a) Calculate the speed of the trio if they ran through the room undeflected. 2
(b) On Earth, Sulleyona and Mikleighs attitude would have been likened to
Albert Einsteins whereas Mr. Bronnerneus would have been said to be like
Max Planck in attitude.

research is removed from social and political forces 5

The trio programmed a rail gun to shoot Phoeboo into orbit so she could catch
