The 3rd Eye

Nowadays, technology is strongly growing as much as the benefit
of technology to disabilities. The 3rd Eye app is written to help
blind and visually impaired people as its name 3rd Eye. Basically,
the app can do 3 main features:

- Face recognition: Based on what we are researching in our

laboratory about image processing; we are ready to bring
the face recognition feature to build the 3rd Eye app. The app
first collects pictures from users family members, friends
with their name. Then the app will train a model which is
able to classify and recognize the individual. Afterward, the
blind will know if any familiar faces are around them. By
using a deep convolutional neural network [1], we can
achieve an outstanding performance on face recognition
tasks even exceeding human performance in some domains
with a remarkable accuracy 93.18%. The app also supports
to add a new person with label name in the dataset. The
internet connection is required when the app trains a model
and adds a new person.

- Image Captioning: Automatically describing the content of

an image is an essential problem in artificial intelligence that
combines computer vision and natural language processing.
Image can tell everything which is especially helpful for the
blind and visual impaired. By also using a deep convolutional
neural network and a Long short-term memory (LSTM)
network [2]. We trained a model from the 2015 MSCOCO
Image Captioning Challenge [3] which show the accuracy of
the model and the fluency of the language it learns solely
from image descriptions. For example: A man is holding a
knife in a dark room. A gold bus is coming. A hole is in a
construction area, etc. Those examples are given favorable
information for blind and visually impaired people.
 - Emotional Detection: Based on the algorithm using in face
recognition, the app also can detect the emotional of a facial
image. The blind will know the emotion of the person during
the conversation.

Finally, the app will use VoiceOver (iOS) or TalkBack (Android) to

control all features if we use a phone camera. More progressively,
we are planing to build a wireless camera glasses for convenient
taking picture. Based on the market research, it is around 30$ to
build a camera glasses which will allow the blind or visually
impaired to take a picture right through without holding a phone.
Overview, users will only need to open the app, then based on the
voice command to a headphone (wired or wireless) connect to a
phone, the camera from the glasses will take a picture and then
return the answer back to the user. The blind now will know who
are around them and their emotion, what is the scenery around
them.

What consumer or market problem will this App solve?

The 3rd Eye app is an advanced step in artificial intelligent
assistant app. The first app has a face recognition feature
handling multiple faces and an image captioning feature reading
the content of an image. It will become a remarkable assistant
which gives information about surrounding to blind or visually
impaired people. The app will solve the blind or visually impaired
problems needing an app which can help them to avoid some
awkward situation. For example: when they come to a classroom
or meeting room, walk on the street, go to a restaurant, the app
can tell who are around them. Also, they can add a new friend to
the app which will able to recognize next time. Besides, the app
will solve a market problem which required a powerful device,
heavy and expensive glasses to handle such of exhausted
computational task like what we propose. Since nowadays a
smartphone phone and a machine learning tool are perfect to
bring proposal features through an app. The price of the 3 rd Eye
app is extremely cheap to compare with some of devices like
eSight or Google Glass which also bring vision to the visually
impaired.

Smartphone becomes more popular and becomes an integral tool
for the disabilities. The mission is to bring vision to the blind and
visually impaired through an application. There is absolutely a
need of the app since it can help the visually impaired can better
understand who and what is going on around them. There is also
a bright future of the app, what we propose is what we are able to
do. Otherwise, in the future, the app can add more features such
as text to speech, distance measurement based on image
processing.
Are there similar Apps in the market, if yes, what makes
this App idea unique? (200 words or less) *:
There are few apps having emotional detection such as IntraFace
(iOS), Emotion Recognition (Android) but the 3 rd Eye app is an
artificial intelligent app which give a high accuracy of
performance. There are also few apps support face recognition
such as Recognizeme, FaceLock, FaceVault (iOS) or FaceLock Pro,
Closeli (Android) but they basically use for security purpose which
single or few faces and the accuracy is depressed to compare
with the 3rd Eye. The 3rd Eye is the first app having the image
caption feature, and it is the first time consider face recognition
and emotional detection for the purpose of helping the visually
impaired.

The Puppybook App is built based on a deep convolutional neural
network technology researching in our laboratory which can
accurately recognize 340 dog breeds in the world. The app is able
to distinguish the most difficult task between an Alaskan
Malumute and a Siberian Husky. By using the information from
recognition task, we can add more features to the app:
- Puppy Dictionary: After you recognize a dog, you can learn
more about them with personality, history, health, nutrition,
grooming information.
- Puppy Social: Based on the picture of your dog uploaded to
the app, the app will search for nearby person who have the
same dog in priority, next are different kind of dog. Then,
there is a group chat between people having the same dog
to share experiences, ask questions, prevent dog injuries,
diseases.
- Puppy Lost: If someone sees a wandering dog and uploads a
picture to the app, the owner can find the dog nearby
sharing the same type which label as lost. It will save an
abundant time by finding exactly the type of dog you lost.
Briefly, the purpose of the app is to create a dogs Facebook call
Puppybook which gives information about the dog you like,
sharing the care experiences, finding a lost dog. In the future, the
app not only limit in puppies but other pets.
What consumer or market problem will this App solve?

The Puppybook is created to solve the dog owner problems. They
are wasting time to find a lost dog because too many dogs are
lost especially in big cities. Also, they lack a place to ask and
share Q&A about how to take care their dog. Most prominently,
we propose a robust technique to recognize a puppy based on the
image, helping a dog lover learn more about the dog life.

words or less) *:
Based on the interview of 3 members in Petes Pet Posse (OSUs
Pet Therapy Program) and 8 dog owners. We found out 89% of
them are interested in the Puppybook app, especially the
therapies from Petes Pet Posse. They think it is a great idea which
help the dog owner learn more about the dog, and more
important since they can ask a question when they see some
weird behaviors from their dog and decide an immediate solution.
They are happy to be a part of the Puppybook partner and they
can share their knowledge about dog. For the dog owner and dog
lover, they think it will be a great app because when they come to
a pets day event, walk around on the street or a park, they see a
strange dog and curious what is the kind of dog. The app is
exactly a perfect tool to help them do that. Also, the Puppy Lost is
a great idea, but they think it will depend on how many users
using the app. If we can build a good network and many
interaction, it will really become an impressive app.

There are few apps also having those features such as Finding
Rover, DogSnap, Doggy (iOS) but none of them are good enough.
Finding Rover is a pretty big social network which helps to find a
lost dog but they dont support to recognize dog breed and no
group chat to ask questions. Doggy is only able to realize around
150 kinds of dogs but usually give a wrong answer between two
similar dogs. Puppybook is the first app having a robust
performance on distinguishing puppies. Also, it supports to have a
group chat between shared puppy owners. And, the app is a
great tool which helps to find lost puppies by narrowing down the
list of lost them.

The users of the Puppybook are dog owners and dog lovers.

Describe your app idea (500 words or less) *

The app idea is a tool for education purpose that is similar to
Bright Space website but with expanded utilities.
- Firstly, does not like Bright Space which users need to open
the website, login in and re-login after every time-out
session, this app only requires a one-time login using OSU
account.
- Secondly, along with base usage like Bright Space, a number
of utilities would be added to this app. For example, students
can easily create a group chat for their group works, projects
and communication. In addition, books can be checked out
from the library. For Professors, the app uses to set up an
appointment with Professor. Also, it can use to take
attendant by using a QR code given during a lecture and
only allow to use phone camera to take.
- Thirdly, since remembering deadlines is problematic
especially for students who have a heavy workload, this app
has a reminder system that will alert ahead when a deadline,
exam, event or appointment is coming.
- Last but not least, this app can be used not only in OSU but
also in every university.
Basically, the Student Space app is a mobile version of Bright
Space service website, it helps students to keep track on their
class, create group meeting, set up an appointment with
Professor, check out books, and take attendant. The app will
become a necessary tool for students in the future.
What consumer or market problem will this App solve?

The Student Space app is built to solve student problems.
Students especially undergraduate students take many classes
and unable to keep track on the assignment schedule. They also
take time to figure it out what kind of chat group they should use
such as WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, etc. By using the OSU account,
students now no longer have to worry about that. In addition,
Professor have a great tool which saves the time to take
attendant.
Describe briefly why is there a need for this App? (200
words or less) *
Based on the interviews of 12 students, we found out two
targeted customers. Undergraduate students really care about the
awareness for the assignment schedule, some students take 19
credit hours, and it becomes crazy on their schedule. Otherwise,
graduate students only take 6-9 credit hours and they usually
have big projects but not every week. So they dont care much
about the assignment alarm, but they are more interested in how
to create a group chat and how to contact with Professor faster
since sometimes they struggle on the project and want to have a
feedback from Professor. Overall, 92% of students show their
interest in the app. We think it is the time to bring Student Space
to OSU.
Are there similar Apps in the market, if yes, what makes
this App idea unique? (200 words or less) *
There are few apps which help student to manage time such as
TimeFul (iOS), Remember The Milk (iOS) but it requires you to add
all your schedules into the app first before you get an alarm.
There are also many apps are able to create a group chat, but it
requires to create a new account and on each class, you may
have to use other apps. The Student Space app is the first app
which syncs with a university system (Bright Space) to help
students awareness about their schedule, make a group chat, set
up an appointment, take attendant, check out the book.
