PROSPECTUS

SWEEKAAR AND UPKAAR:

Sweekaar Rehabilitation institute for the handicapped was started in 1977 to


rehabilitate the persons with mental retardation, locomotor disability and speech
and hearing impairment, serving for the past 30 years. Our motto is
rehabilitation from “Womb to Tomb”.

We could grow to the present stature starting with two staff members and 5
children in a small room to 450 rooms facility manned by 400 staff members
rendering services for 2550 people per day through various departments. We
provide services for high-risk babies, early intervention for children with
developmental delays, children with Autism, M.R, C.P., A.D.H.D, L.D. Home for
aged, Artificail Limb Center, Drug De addiction center, Comprehensive rural
rehabilitation centers and mental illness.

Sweekaar is a non-profit, non-commercial voluntary organization. Upkaar,


Dr.Pasupuleti Nirmala Hanumantha Rao Charitable trust is a sister organization
of Sweekaar. Both the organizations are serving the mentally handicapped,
physically disabled, deaf, aged, drug addicts, widows, orphans and destitutes.

Sweekaar and Upkaar, the two monuments bear the testimony of our concern
and commitment to the disabled and mentally ill people. All these centers will
provide extensive exposure to students of Rehabilitation Psychology and Clinical
Psychology..

Preamble:

The past thirty years have witnessed exponential progress in research and
practice to develop comprehensive rehabilitation model for those afflicted with
disability. Rehabilitation is becoming increasingly recognized as an intellectually
respectable part of the process of recovery and adjustment due to disability.

To ensure that rehabilitation occurs successfully, one needs to develop a


perceptive and psychological approach to persons with disability. To make
rehabilitation to be effective it must be based on a blend of organized effective
delivery services which capitalizes development of positive self image,
environmental resources and the application of generic rehabilitation services
which employ psychological, social, behavioral and educational resources.
Rehabilitation psychology is emerging as new frontier in the field of disability and
Clinical Psychology is a well established field..
M.PHIL. IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Course Description: The aim of the Course is to prepare the student to
function as a qualified professional- clinical psychologist in the area of mental
health by offereing diagnostic, therapeutic, teaching, research and rehabilitation
services.

Objectives: The course is organized as a rigorous two years program with


extensive theoretical inputs and adequate clinical experience and skill to provide
training in the area of clinical psychology.

Content of the Course:


I YEAR (Part 1)
GROUP ‘A’

Paper I : Psychosocial Foundation of behavior


Paper II : Statistics and research methodology
Paper III : Psychiatry
Practical : Practical in Psyhcodiagnostic including viva voice

GROUP ‘B’

Submission : Submission of five full length psychodiagnostic records (out of five


one shoud be child case)

II YEAR (Part 2)
GROUP ‘A’

Paper I : Biological Foundations of behavior


Paper II : Psychotherapy and Counselling
Paper III : Behavioral Medicine
Practical : Practical in Clinical Application of Psychology including viva voice

GROUP ‘B’

Submission : Submission of five fully worked out therapeutic case records( out of
five one should be child therapy record)

GROUP ‘C’
Dissertation : Dissertation under the guidance of a Clinical Psychology faculty.

Prospectus:
On completion of the course, the student is expected to perform the following
functions
1) Diagnostic mental health problems.
2) Undertake psychotherapy and do research
3) Apply psychological principles and techniques in rehabilitating persons
with mental health problems and disabilities.
4) Work with the psychological dimensions of physical diseases and illness
behavior, and formulate/undertake well-targeted psychosocial
interventions.
5) Undertake research in the areas of clinical psychology, mental
health/illness and in areas of physical health/diseases.
6) Undertaking teaching assignments in clinical psychology

Admission process:
Admission will be on the basis of the merit in entrance examination
conducted by the O.U. following the rules of O.U.

Timings:
9.00 am to 5.00 pm
Fully equipped library and laboratory with latest equipment are available.

Eligibility:
Minimum educational requirement for admission to this course will be fulltime
regular M.A/M.sc degree in psychology and minimum of 55% marks in aggregate
is essential. Candidates with M.A/M.Sc. degree by regular course are eligible.
Part time course or courses by distance education are not eligible.

Attendance:
a) Course of study, must continuously be pursued unless special
exemption is obtained. Any interruption in a student’s attendance
during the course of study, due to illness or other extraordinary
circumstances must be notified to the head of the Institute and
permission should be obtained.
b) A minimum attendance of 80%(in the academic term) shall be
necessary for taking the respective examination.
Placement:
In addition to placement in mental health centers, students will
have placement in Pediatrics and schools.

Duration:
This is full time clinical course providing opportunities for appropriate
practicum and apprenticeship experiences for two academic years divided as
part1 and part2

Fees:

1. Tuition fees Rs 50,000/- per year


2. Library fees Rs. 2,000.00
3. Laboratory fees Rs 3,000.00
4. Examination fees As per O.U

Format of Teaching:
Clinical case discussion, supported by seminars and case conferences journal
clubs .

Examination and Evaluation:


a) The examination is held in 2 parts. Part 1 is held at the end f the first year
and part 2 is held at the end of second year. The student will not be allowed
to take part 2 examination unless he or she has passed the part1
examination.
b) A candidate who has not appeared or failed in part 1 of the regular
examination may be allowed to continue the course for the second year and
be allowed to take the supplementary examination.
c) A minimum period of 3 months additional attendance shall be necessary for a
candidate before appearing for the examination in case he fails to clear part 1
and/ or part 2 within a period of 3 years (from the year of admission to the
course)

Internal Assessment:
In each subject 30% marks will be determined based on written / clinical
exams, viva voice and supervised clinical work. These marks will be
added to the marks allocated to the respective subjects in the early final
examination. The results of the final examination will be declared on the
basis of the total so obtained. The guidelines for allocating the internal
marks may be prepared by the institution concerned

Minimum for Pass:


a) No candidate shall be declared to have passed in either of the two parts of
the M.Phil examination unless he or she obtains less than 55% of marks
in:

i) Each of theory paper


ii) Each of the practical / clinical and viva voice examination
iii) Each of the submissions
iv) The dissertation (in the case of part 2 only)

b) A candidate who obtains 75% and above marks in the aggregate of both
the parts shall be declared to have with distinction. A candidate who
secures between 60 and 75% marks in the aggregate of both the parts
shall be declared to passed M.Phil degree in first class. The other
successful candidate as per the class (a) of the above shall be declared to
be passed M.Phil in second class. If a candidate fails to pursue the course
in a continuous basis, or fails or absent himself / herself from appearing
any of the University theory and practical exams of part 1 and part 2, the
class shall not be awarded. The merit class (distinction/first class) is
awarded to those candidates who passed both part1 and pat2
examination in first attempt.
c) No candidate shall be permitted to appear either of part 1 or 2 examination
more than 3 times.

M.PHIL IN REHABILITATION PSYCHOLOGY

The course is designed to create a cadre of highly competent


professionals / Specialists at the Master Trainer level in the field of Rehabilitation
Psychology.

Rehabilitation Psychology is emerging as a forceful and dynamic discipline in the


disability rehabilitation area which however has yet to establish in an organized
manner. Hence, there is a basic need to train professionals at high level of
competence.

Rehabilitation psychologists qualified at M.Phil level can undertake large number


of long term training programmes at different levels for delivery of services in the
field of disability to meet the enormous demands of rehabilitation professionals
and personnel in the country.

As a part of human resources development and creation of skilled manpower


with excellence in the field of disability, it is proposed to initiate M.Phil in
Rehabilitation psychology. The course is modeled after the M.Phil programe in
Clinical Psychology developed by the RCI.

This course is different from regular M.Phil course and hence the pattern of
teaching and examination will vary accordingly. The regular M.Phil course is an
academic and research oriented course while this course focuses on practical
experience in Rehabilitation Psychology. The passed out candidates of this
course can work as practitioners and master trainers in the field.

Rehabilitation psychology is recently established field. It is further not coming up


both as independent sphere of professional training as well as applied field of
knowledge. Hence, there is a basic need to train professionals at high level of
competence.

Aim:
The aim of the M.Phil rehabilitation psychology is to create professionals with
high quality competencies to work as master trainees/specialists in the field of
disability.

Objectives:
The course is organized as a rigorous two years program with extensive
theoretical inputs and intensive and practical skills in disability rehabilitation.
The function of rehabilitation psychology will involve a convergence of
three roles, namely, clinician counselor and social / community psychologist.

Content of the Course:


General framework of the course

The curriculum comprises of the following three types of the courses.

Foundation course: consists of four theory papers with a credit of two each and
four practical papers with the credit of one each.

Support Course: Consists of five theory papers and five practical papers with a
credit of two each.

Core course: Consists of nine theory papers and nine practical papers with a
credit of thee each.

In addition, there is a project work and comprehensive viva involving 3 credits


each.

Prospectus:
On completion of the course, the student is expected to perform the following

Admission process:
Admission will be on the basis of the merit in entrance examination
conducted by the O.U. following the rules of O.U.

Eligibility:
Minimum educational requirement for admission to this course will be fulltime
regular M.A/M.Sc degree in psychology from a university recognized by UGC
with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate preferably with special paper in
clinical psychology. For SC/St/OBC category, minimum of 50% marks in
aggregate is essential.

Attendance:
As this is a professional course, the students pursue the course of study
continuously. A minimum attendance of 75% in each of the theory and
practical papers separately shall be necessary before taking the
respective examination. However, a relaxation of 10% attendance or as
per the existing rule of the University will be considered on medical
grounds.
Duration:
The duration of the course will be two years, two semesters in each year
and a total of four semesters.

Fees:
1. Tuition fees Rs 35,000/- per year
2. Library fees Rs. 2,000/- per year
3. Laboratory fees Rs. 3,000/- per year
4. Examination fees As per O.U.

Format of Teaching:
Clinical case discussion, supported by seminars and case conferences journal
clubs.

Examination and Evaluation:


There shall be examination at the end of each semester. The student will not be
allowed to take the II year examination unless he/she has passed the I year
examination

Periodical Evaluation:
The candidate will be periodically evaluated in all the practical’s. All the records
will be considered as a part of internal assessment

Internal Assessment:
In each subject 30% marks will be determined based on written/clinical
exams, viva- voce and supervised clinical work by the internal examiner. These
marks will be added to the marks allocated to the respective subjects in the
yearly final examinations. The results of the final examinations will be declared
on the basis of the total so obtained.

Minimum for Pass:


The minimum pass marks is 50%. No candidate shall be declared to have
passed in any of the Semester of the M.Phil examination unless he/she
obtains not less than 50% of the marks in:

i) Each of the theory


ii) Each of the Practical paper
iii) Project Work

A candidate who secures not less than 55% marks in each paper and
overall 75% and above will be awarded passed with distinction. A
candidate who secures between 60% and 75% marks in the aggregate of
4 semesters shall be declared to have passed in I class
Provision of supplementary Exams
A candidate who has not appeared or failed in a particular semester will
be allowed to continue the subsequent semester and appear for the subsequent
regular examination as and when it is held. No supplementary examination will
be conducted. A candidate, who fails in more than half the number of papers
both in theory and practicals separately in any given semester, will have to
discontinue the course.

Improvement of Marks
The student will also be given opportunities for improvement of marks in the
particular examination by reappearing in the specific paper in the next
examination. However, the guidelines pertaining to the examination procedures
prescribed by the rehabilitation Council of India may be adopted.

Format for Imparting Training


Training will be imparted in the form of didactic lectures, practical hands on
experience in the clinical and field setting case demonstrations, case
conferences, tutorials, observations and group discussions.

Lectures
Lectures will be delivered by experts in the field along with case presentation
using audio-visual aids.

Case Conferences/Seminars/ journals club


The student will be expected to do a detailed work up of a case and make
presentation in the conference fortnightly.

The student will be expected to present a seminar on any important theme and
review of a journal article once a week.

Tutorials
For intense teaching in therapeutics , the student will be divided into groups and
trained in close interaction in tutorials

Agency visits

The students will be visiting various institutions in the field of disability

Field Placement
The students will be placed for group assignment and team management in
certain organizations.

Block Placement
The trainees will be placed in rural community for a period of 4 weeks to carry out
CBR work.
Discipline, Code and Conduct:
1) On admission, each student is given an identity card. The student will
have to wear badges during institute hours is compulsory.
2) Every student should conduct himself / herself in an exemplary
manner both during and after institutional hours. Boys should wear
decent dress (no jeans). Girls should wear salwar kamez or saree
only
3) The parents concern will be responsible if any student indulges in an
act of violence of any kind of misconduct, which will adversely affect
the good academic atmosphere of the institute.
4) If any students character or conduct is found unsatisfactory, the
matter will be reported to the concerned parents/guardians who
should take prompt and immediate action in the matter and also see
the HOD if necessary and given undertaking that such things would
not happen again.
5) Students should not take part in any political activities during their
stay in the institute.
6) If any property of the college is damaged, destroyed and if the culprit
is not traced, the concerned class or batch will be responsible and all
the students of the class or batch will have to pay the cost of the
damaged or lost articles.
7) Suitable disciplinary action will be taken against any student who is
found to be negligent in his/her studies or inattentive in the classes or
irregular in attendance.
8) Any student who is guilty or show disrespect to any member of the
staff will be punished.
9) Smoking, chewing or any form of using tobacco is strictly prohibited
in the campus.
10)Students are not allowed to loiter in the institute premises during
class hours and ragging in any form is strictly prohibited.
11)Till they complete their course they should not undertake any
practice.
12)Any student who does not report on time shall be marked absent.
