Students Communication Studies Outline 2016-2017
Classroom Matters:
1. ALL assignments must be submitted on time
2. Late assignments will not be accepted.
3. Students are encouraged to remain in the class they have been place
4. The classroom or area occupied must be clean at all time
5. ALL students must have a syllabus
6. Students who are late or absent will be reported to the form teachers and then the block
supervisors.
7. Students MUST NOT leave the class without the teachers permission
8. Students MUST participate in all class activities

Course work and activity:


September
1. Lecture: Introducing the Subject
2. Pre-test: Students will explain in 50 words the concept of communication and
communication studies. ** If oral 3 minutes
3. Students will be asked to create a chart showing the communication elements and
process. Due: September 14th 2016
4. Create a simulation in groups on one of the forms of communication. September 20th
5. Monthly test with short answer questions.

October
1. Scenario quiz on context of communication. Due: October 7th
2. Short answer question on forms and types of communication. Due: October 14th
3. Graded Introduction for portfolio (IA). Due: October 21st
4. Peer review of written pieces
5. Monthly test essay question on module one

November
1. Impromptu research on a popular topic within the school. ****done within class time.
Due: November 9th
2. Students assessment of a good speech which they will play in class and present orally
and written. Due: November 16th
3. Submission of Preface and Reflection (IA). Due: November 23rd

4. Monthly test: Short answer questions on research and Language

December Internal exams

Semester 2**dates will be provided


January
1. Creating a table that shows languages in the Caribbean
2. From a piece of writing identifying the variations and explaining their use (past paper
question)
3. Translating creole to English or English to Creole
4. short answer and multiple choice items on module 2
5. Monthly test: essay on Module 2

February
1. Final graded draft of reflection.
2. Short answer questions on module 1
3. Debate on topical issue by students
4. Final graded language analysis
5. Monthly test: past paper on module one

March April
1. Speech delivery simulation exercises
2. Analysis of a good versus bad speech
3. Final speech presentation
4. Short answer and essay questions on the three (3) modules

Module 3: Speaking and Writing: *this module will be the first


module taught.
1. Process and Forms of Communication
2. Contexts of Communication
3. Types of speaking and Writing
A. Organisational Skills (At this stage teachers should incorporate organisational
strategies to familiarise students with this concept and what it entails, this is an
overlap from module one).

a. Students should have selected a topic by the end of September.

Health
The Entertainment Industry in Jamaica (this can involve aspects of the mass media also)
Abuse (you can focus on any aspect)
Education
Sports
Crime and Violence (you can focus on any aspect)
Discrimination
Relationships (focus on any aspect i.e. Infidelity, divorce, parent-child relationships,
family relationships)
Conflict
The Economy

**Students are to use the options provided above.

Students must submit a final draft of the Introduction by the end of October and a draft of
the Preface and Reflection by the end of November.

Module 2: Language and Community: characteristics of Language- Language versus A


Language, introduction of Dialectal variations if possible.

Module 1: Gathering and Processing Information

Research Methods e.g. Data Collection Methods should also be done in Semester one

Semester 2: January -April


Lecture Module 2: Language and Community

January 2016:

- The characteristics of English Creole Languages.


- Dialectal variations will be taught in Semester 2 or completed.

Module 1: Gathering and Processing Information:

- Language strategies and techniques.

Students should submit first draft of completed S.B.A. by the latest the end of February.
