QUAY

ARTS
Richard Long Outreach Project 2017
Application deadline: Midnight, Sun 5th Mar 2017

Background:
We are very pleased to announce that a solo exhibition of work by Richard Long, Britains
leading figure in Land Art, will be displayed at Quay Arts this Spring/Summer. Longs desire
to experience the land through his love of walking often results in ephemeral works which
are recorded photographically. Works also include text-based installations, prints and wall
drawings made directly onto the surface of the gallery walls. He embarks on long distance
walks, in which the journeys motion and time passing becomes part of the work. These
sculptural forms can simply be an adjustment to create visible marks, placing stones into a
linear or geometric form. The subtlety of his work is suitably matched by his elegant
photographic documentations, which often include text or measurements about his
journeys.

The exhibition by Richard Long opens on 8th April and continues until 1st July 2017 in the
West Gallery. The works on display include six photographic/text pieces and a large floor
installation on loan from Southampton City Art gallerys collection. Richard Long himself will
also create a bespoke drawing from local mud directly onto the gallery wall.
There will also be a large vinyl installation of The Isle of Wight As Six Walks, representing a
map of the Island in an abstract text form, which will be on display for the first time.

This project has been made possible from the generous support of the Arts Council of
England and the Ernest Cook Trust.

Artist Brief:
We are seeking an artist (or artists) and creative writer to provide six school workshop
sessions either in school or at Quay Arts, responding to the work by Richard Long, resulting
in a response exhibition in Quay Arts Clayden Gallery. The six school workshops will need to
relate to the artworks in the gallery by Long and on the Islands landscape and environment
through visual art and create writing. An artist may work collaboratively with another artist
or writer but must be aware there is a fixed artist fee for this project.

We want children and young people (CYP), as well as members of the public to explore their
own rural environment and ask them what they love about the Islands landscape. Through
a series of workshops CYP will celebrate the work of Richard Long by responding to his work
in a wide variety of styles, techniques and materials, encompassing writing, painting,
drawing, collage, environmental art, craft, sculpture, photography and text works.
There must be an ongoing participatory element in the exhibition which visitors can add to
throughout the duration of the exhibition and be present at the opening of the exhibition to
support the participatory activity.

School workshops could include walking books, large scale maps of the Island, raw
materials, observation drawings, poetry, prose and commentaries, photographic collages.
School participant ages will be from 6+ and include up to 30 students per workshop session.
