Analysis of 10 kW Horizontal-Axis Wind

Turbine (HAWT)

We propose to design a 10 kW HAWT in order to harness the abundant wind
energy potential in the regions of Ladakh and Leh. The wind speeds in certain
pockets are as high as 40-50kmph along-with sub-zero temperature poses strict
limitations on design requirements. Our aim is to deliver structural design of a
wind turbine. The key focus of our project shall be on:
Tower: The design of tubular tower shall include axial load analysis, lateral
load analysis including local buckling of slender thin cylinder subjected to
variable wind forces along the length of the tower.
Foundation: It shall include analysis due to stress concentration in shaft,
required bearings and fasteners used to clamp it to ground.
Nacelle: The analysis of connecting elements required to fasten Nacelle,
which in-houses generator and other major devices, with tower shall be dealt
with.
Hub: We shall do a stress-strain analysis of hub using some commercial
software and design the bearing requirements between Nacelle and hub.
Turbine blades: We, on assuming a particular airfoil shape shall determine
the length of the blade and elementary aerodynamic analysis in order to meet
the power requirements.
