OEM Solutions

Vertically Integrated Expertise

Over the past 27 years, Thorlabs has grown into a leading manufacturer of components
and systems for the photonics industry. For OEM customers, we are committed to
leveraging our advanced manufacturing infrastructure to accelerate your production
and reduce your time to market.

Our ability to shape solutions to exact and demanding specifications extends across a
comprehensive catalog containing 15,000+ products. Nearly one-third of these were
inspired by the particular requirements of our worldwide customer base.

From thermally stable mirror mounts to vibrationally isolated optical workstations,

from semiconductor laser diodes to fiber-pigtailed optical modulators, or from CNC-
polished aspheric lenses to broadband scan lenses for OCT, our in-house capabilities
span the range from fundamental individual elements to complex integrated systems.
A Letter from Our President and Founder
Over the past three decades, Thorlabs has been privileged to play a role
in the advancement of the photonic sciences. Throughout our existence,
weve evolved from a small startup, machining a handful of basic
optomechanical components in the early years, to a vibrant member of the
photonics community releasing over 1,300 new items to our website annually.
The growth of our portfolio can be attributed to a mix of organic product
line extensions, greenfield initiatives into new technologies such as Optical
Coherence Tomography (OCT), and a series of acquisitions that have
added new manufacturing competencies at various locations around the
globe. Today, Thorlabs is comprised of 15 manufacturing and design facilities
in 9 countries.

Thorlabs continual double-digit growth has allowed us to invest heavily in the

infrastructure and capital equipment needed to manufacture the majority of
the 15,000 photonics products that comprise our online catalog. In addition,
these in-house manufacturing capabilities give us the freedom to respond Alex Cable - Thorlabs President & Founder
to the needs of our customers, whether they be for large quantities of an
existing product or a low volume request for a modification to an existing stocked design.

Consequently, we are able to partner with you, not only during the concept phase when one traditionally buys a basket of
items in small quantities, but also when you reach full production and need a partner capable of manufacturing quantities
of select items that can be called off as needed. While Thorlabs has always been a price leader, we can realize additional
economies of scale when provided with the ability to plan future production/deliveries. These cost savings, which we share
with our OEM customers, are often significant. They arise from being able to integrate your OEM needs with our own internal
production in a manner that ensures on-time deliveries at highly competitive prices.

Our product portfolio, as you probably know, contains one of the most extensive photonic tools selection in the world. What
you might not know is that Thorlabs has added many components that are specifically designed to serve the OEM side of our
customer base. Offering these component parts to a multitude of OEM customers further ensures economies of scale that
reinforce our strength as a competitive OEM supplier.

Additionally, there is a customer focus that permeates our entire OEM Business Group, leading us to put into place processes
that show a deep respect for the responsibility that comes with supplying a production facility. As an OEM supplier, we have
built a number of additional elements that provide all important services, timed take-outs that are flexible, safety stock, and
strict revision controls, all of which are designed to ensure there are no surprises.

We are committed to being a strong partner for your OEM needs, with a desire to be connected to our industry in a way that
far exceeds what would be expected of a vendor. As our OEM business continues to grow, I personally invite you to contact
me at any time to provide feedback on any of our products or services. It is a privilege to have my companys products serve
as the building blocks within the systems and subsystems you produce.

Sincerely,

Alex Cable

The Process
Thorlabs multi-disciplinary engineering teams and substantial manufacturing infrastructure across multiple product lines confer
powerful advantages to our OEM partners. From raw ideas and materials to development and final production, our design
and manufacturing takes place entirely in-house. This high degree of vertical integration creates significant cost efficiencies,
minimizes component lead times, and eliminates design compromises.

We maintain and extend these advantages not only because of our OEM partners but also because they are critical to our
core catalog business. For example, they have enabled us to realize our Polaris family of ultrastable optic mounts, which are
optimized from start to finish for peak performance in a wide variety of demanding applications.

The Polaris family results from the application of every possible best practice to optic mount manufacturing. It leverages the
companys deep understanding of materials science, engineering techniques, and our customers requirements, exploring
the full depth of product analysis and customization that Thorlabs is able to deploy.

Polaris optic mounts are used extensively for prototyping and at scale. They are the mounts of choice for lasers used in life
sciences research, industrial processing, medicine, and other situations where performance variations and downtime are
strictly not permissible.
Displacement of 6 mm Thick, 1" Mirror Design and Testing
As a completely vertically integrated photonics company, our
familiarity with lab- and industrial-scale needs gives us a uniquely deep
appreciation of the challenges posed by specific applications. For
Polaris, our team of scientists and engineers began by identifying the
most common causes of beam misalignment: temperature-induced
hysteresis of the beam position, crosstalk, drift, and backlash. Every

aspect of the Polaris design is targeted at minimizing the contribution
of these errors to the beam pointing.

After identifying the features that would provide the best

performance, we subjected our designs to months of rigorous
theoretical and real-world testing. For example, finite element
analysis (FEA) was used to ensure that mounting stresses would not
compromise the mirrors intrinsic surface flatness.

To provide experimental verification of the Polaris mounts

performance, we used our in-house Zygo interferometer, which can
quantify wavefront error with <0.01 resolution. The Zygo confirmed
that the surface flatness of the mounted mirror was on the order of

all possible sources of beam pointing error: optical systems.

u All materials, such as the frame, matched adjuster screws, and lock nuts are
fabricated from stainless steel with matched coefficients of thermal expansion, minimizing stress resulting
from temperature changes.

u The stainless steel in the mount is heat treated prior to assembly, removing internal stresses that can cause long-term
creep and eliminating thermal hysteresis.

u Residual stress caused by machining, which can cause micro-creep, is minimized by performing a final kiss cutting
technique during machining, heat treating, acid etching, and final thermal stress relieving.

u Careful control of the dimensional tolerances of the front and back plates is employed to minimize crosstalk, ensuring that
the pitch and yaw actuators are orthogonal.

Optomechanics

Our optomechanics manufacturing facility rapidly produces prototypes for evaluation and can quickly ramp up to production volumes.

Thorlabs mechanics design staff consists of skilled and experienced engineers and draftsmen. They are extremely well versed
in optimizing components and systems for mechanical and thermal stability, cost effectiveness, and high performance in the
desired application, and are accustomed to realizing these traits when manufacturing in volume.

Our machine shop is capable of producing 20,000 individual components per week. The staff consists of almost fifty machinists
who work in two shifts; however, our shop can operate key equipment up to 20 hours per day "lights out." With our mills, lathes,
screw machines, and laser engravers in-house, we can be sure that all of our production processes are carefully controlled.
Our machinists' innovative techniques use standard shop equipment in unique ways to increase the efficiency of each
machine, including designing custom fixtures that greatly reduce or eliminate setup time. Our shop's overall goal is to utilize the
latest technology to produce parts faster while minimizing costs.
