BEST Pre-Snap Communication; Play-Action Rollouts; Touch; Competitive Toughness
WORST Anticipation; Arm Strength; Ball Placement
PROJECTION A backup QB whose mind for the game can make him effective in any passing scheme
relying predominantly on short throws. Limitations on his ball placement ability and arm
strength make him unsuitable as a full-time starter.
Best fit in a run-first offense whose passing attack will maximize his ability to get the ball
SCHEME FIT out of his hands quickly to the short areas of the field and leverage his proficiency in play-
action.
SUMMARY
7th-year QB who has started in 26 of 43 career games, including 9 starts in 11 games played in 2015, his first
season with Houston. Played for second time in career under HC Bill OBrien, and first time under OC George
Godsey, in a passing attack that centered around short passes with deep shots off of play-action. Began season
as starter before being benched during Week 1 for Ryan Mallett. Returned to starting lineup in Week 6 in place
of the injured Mallett and held job for remainder of season, outside of missing three games due to a pair of
concussions. Has solid height with an adequate build, weight and thickness in lower body. Displays good
athletic ability, with good balance and quickness, along with solid agility and explosiveness. Very involved and
demonstrative with pre-snap communication at LOS, which includes identifying the Mike, adjusting protection
calls and checking out of plays altogether. Displays very good clock management, consistently avoiding delay-
of-game calls and working the boundary well in the two-minute offense. Looks composed and displays good
footwork/fluidity/COD while executing PA fakes, dropbacks/ rollouts while carrying the ball at a good height.
Shows solid overall decision making with good ability to scan the full field through his progressions and make
quick reads/decisions based on the coverage, utilize good situational awareness to take care of the football in
high-leverage situations (Red Zone, 4th Qtr), play within the limitations of his arm talent and throw the ball
away/take sacks when necessary. Displays good ability to extend plays, consistently using slide and step-up
techniques to buy time within the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield and staying ready to throw, while
also showing solid foot speed/acceleration with the ability to pick up yards that the defense gives him,
particularly in order to keep the chains moving on 3rd down. Exhibits solid overall play strength, with the
ability to utilize core to shrug off sacks while staying on his feet and getting the football out. Displays good
release quickness, with a quick, compact motion, solid elbow height at the release point, and good ability to
vary arm angles in order to adjust to passing lane. Solid accuracy overall with good accuracy throwing to
stationary targets and good ability to remain accurate on throws while rolling to his right. Shows solid arm
strength in the short and intermediate zones while working to the MOF. Exhibits good touch, understanding
when it is appropriate to take off/put on heat to his throws. Shows good competitive toughness and poise by
maintaining a composed demeanor and not wilting under pressure/in adverse situations, exhibiting
confidence in his playmakers and not shying away from giving them opportunities to make plays, keeping
teammates focused/invested in the game, and absorbing hits in the pocket when necessary to complete passes
while being able to keep getting up/coming back. Doesnt show a feel for pressure outside of his field of vision
and is prone to blindside hits resulting in strip-sacks. Will fade away from imminent contact at the point of
release, particularly when sliding within pocket or rolling out. Fails to consistently bring weight forward and
step into throws, especially noticeable on deep balls. Pats the ball on throws that require extra arm strength,
occasionally crow-hopping. Cuts the ball loose quicker than needed to shallow crossing routes/checkdowns
when he has a clean pocket and other targets down the field who appear to be open. Struggles with ball
placement at all levels of the field, consistently throwing behind moving targets, which results in dropped
passes, severely limits YAC opportunities, gives defenders a chance to get a hand in to break up passes and
costs his team chances to convert on 3rd down. Will track receivers coming across the middle and lacks the
knack for anticipating when to throw the ball to receivers coming out of breaks, holding the ball until after they
have come out of it, which gives defenders a chance to recover, break on the route to prevent the completion
and/or land a big hit on a prone receiver. Displays adequate arm strength, lacking the ability to drive the ball
downfield outside the numbers or deep down MOF, resulting in the offense having to play within a tighter
space. A player you can win in spite of. A backup QB whose mind for the game can make him effective in any
passing scheme relying predominantly on short throws. Limitations on his ball placement ability and arm
strength make him unsuitable as a full-time starter.
