International Film

Cinema Paradiso

1. Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

Before we viewed this film, it was clear that a number of people in the class, including

myself, have seen the film and were immediately excited to see it. The film was made

during a cinematic rise in Italian cinema and is one of the finest foreign films Ive ever

seen. It is a love letter to cinema and shows how people feel and connect with film,

through viewings and creation.

2. Find a related article and summarize the content.

Barnett, Laura. "Salvatore Cascio: 'Cinema Paradiso Is about the Power of Dreams'."

Cinema Paradiso: 25th Anniversary. Guardian News and Media, 02 Dec. 2013. Web. 12

Mar. 2017.

Laura Barnett reflects on the film twenty-five years after its release, just as a new release

of the film had been announced. She lets us as a reader know how that Giuseppe

Tornatore was only thirty-two when he directed the film, which was only his second

movie. For the majority of this article, Barnett focuses on Salvatore Cascio, who played
Toto in the film. He looks back on his role fondly and reflects on being a child star. After

participating in this film, he embraced the role he had and continued acting. Barnett ends

the article by explaining how the films love for the art of film is still extremely relevant,

with how our society loves going to the movies.

3. Apply the article to the film screened in class.

The article I chose only emphasizes on the key pieces of Cinema Paradiso that make it an

important film. The article goes in depth about the heart and emotions that the film

throws directly at its audience and how it grips you. The author takes time to show us

how so many impressive things were happening around this movie, being directed by a

young director and allowing a child star to continue working. The film was an all around

success and continues to find new viewers.

4. Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result

of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.

Cinema Paradiso isnt exclusively a wonderful foreign language film; its an excellent

film in any genre. The film is uplifting, heartbreaking, and filled with love from start to

finish. Throughout the film you begin to connect so deeply to the characters and the

events that take place surrounding their towns cinema theater that you cant help but be

filled with emotion in each scene. There is a deeply rooted display of love towards the art

of films and viewing films in this movie and it shows something we can all relate to.
Movies are still a huge part of our society and we all come together to enjoy the same

movie with many people we might not even know. Both this movie and the movie going

experience showcased within it perfectly capture emotions we all have felt before.
