Introduction to social work

Social work is an academic and practice-based professional discipline that


seeks to facilitate the welfare of communities, individuals, families, and
groups. Social work can be defined as progressive professional process
of helping people to help themselves for the betterment of survival and
improvement of livelihood. It may promote social change, development,
cohesion, and empowerment. Underpinned by theories of social sciences
and guided by principles of social justice, human rights, collective
responsibility, and respect for diversities , social work engages people and
structures to address life challenges and enhance well-being.
A practicing professional with a degree in social work is called a social
worker. Examples of fields a social worker may be employed in are poverty
relief , life skills , social skills , community development, rural
development,
urbanization adjustment , forensics , corrections, legislation ,
industrial relations, social inclusion, child protection , elder protection ,
women's rights , human rights, social rejection management , addictions
rehabilitation, moral development, cultural mediation, disaster
management,
mental health , behaviour therapy and disabilities .

Introduction to field work
Field work or Field research is the collection of information outside of a
laboratory, library or workplace setting . In social work practice , field work
defines to the placement of social work students where they visit the
field , apply the different tools and technique, principles of social work.
Field work is the place where trainee apply theoretical knowledge of the
students into practical one. In simple word, it is an outdoor activity.

Field work placement is a chance to every individual students to show


their and improve their creativity , skills , and apply the theoretical
knowledge. As a part of social work practical, the trainee was placed in an
organization in Boudha Edulift Academy which is a non profit
educational initiative dedicated towards transforming and empowering the
lives especially of the Himalayan and Tibetan children and youth
through a new kind of education which is holistic and experimental based.
In this field work, the trainee was given a responsibility to engage
students in experimental education that involves various art forms in
order to develop their language skill along with creativity
,communication , collaboration , and critical thinking skill through the Art
and language program. The main purpose of field work was to complete
the partial work of 25o hours inside the organization and to learn, observe
for self learning and explore.

Objective of Field work
The main motif of visiting organization, engaging with organization and
involving with different organization done along by the field placement.

Observation
Trainee went to organization, to learn and research about the
organization and its formation. How activities are carried out? How it
perform its tasks. On what basis organization work and perform the work.

Learning
Trainee went for field work to know and engaged with that organization .To
develop some related skills and learning which are required for the social
worker.

Organization and its formation


Trainee went for field work to have knowledge about the organization,
mainly the administrative working and its formation and association for
the betterment of society along with betterment of country.

To develop professional relationship


Trainee also went for field visit for the better professional relationship
with the team of organization and other associated organization.
Mainly for the development of self.

Introduction
EduLift Academy is a non-profit project of Social Development Initiative Nepal
(SDI-Nepal) a non-
governmental organization registered with the Government of Nepal's Social
Welfare Council. SDINepal aspires to become a world-class entrepreneurial NGO
focusing on educational, social and healthcare initiatives. EdulIft Academy is
dedicated towards transforming and empowering the lives
of Nepalese youth through a holistic and experiential-based education. Our
approach is to provide students with a versatile toolkit with which they can build
their own future.
Our toolkit focuses on:
Improving student academic performance. A customized college preparatory
program Counseling students to prepare for ones career. Advancing students
with practical life-skills such as entrepreneurship and technology skills.

OBJECTIVES
At EduLift, the focus shifts from teaching to learning . We practice an integrated
approach to learning where experimental based education is at its heart .
We aim to,
Objective 1 :

To engage students in experimental education that involves various art


forms in order to
develop their language skills along with creativity, communication,
collaboration and critical thinking skills through the Arts and Language
program
Objective 2 :
To facilitate students to create individual plans of action in order to assist
them during transitional phases ( from school to different academic or
work area ) through the career counselling workshops.
Objective 3 :
To better equip students (post Grade 10 ) with life -skills (leadership,
technology, and communication skills ) in order to enable them to further
their studies and improve their chances of livelihood through the Explore
After SLC/ Grade 10 program.

Our Mission
EdulIft Academy is dedicated towards transforming and
empowering the lives of Nepalese youth through a holistic and
experiential-based education. Our approach is to provide
students with a versatile toolkit with which they can build their

Our vision is for a new kind of education, where students are
learning things that are actually preparing them for life. We
envision a future where the EduLift model based on relevant
life-skills training through an experiential teaching practice is
incorporated as part of the mainstream curricula

ACTIVITY CARRIED OUT

Art and language


Each course is completely immersed in one particular art form. For
example, in our Drama and Language skills everyday through
performance and enactment. Student learn the language with the support
of that art from unlike regular Englishclasses. Hence, student find
themselves understanding that particular form of art and appreciating it
while learning language. As the course progress, students will be trained
and enabled to use language not just as simple texts but as a tool for self
expression, to tell their stories or to share their message across. Being
able to use language in that way makes it a life skill that the dynamic
nature of each course, by the end of the program each student will have
contributed to creating a poem, a story, a play, a design or even a video
which will only establish certain confidence of creativity and potential in
each participant.

Explore program (After class 10 examination)


Experiment: Continuous weekly projects for 8 weeks will train student
in the basic project of research, develop, implement and presentation.
These weekly projects eiil be run with minimum intervention where
teachers will take the role only of facilitators. Through constant need to
direct the project as well as to work and communicate well with team
members for completion, student will learn to take initiative of a new idea
and be creative in finding solutions .Also, they will learn through trial and
error to be more patient and listen to their team mates. They will also
learn to incorporate technology into their learning and during presentation
and reflection phase. Some project topics will also urge students to focus
on their environment and question their own social responsiveness.

Explore: Individual counseling at EduLift is student oriented to its core.


Each student will produce an indicidual Action paln by the end of their 8
weeks. With the aid of the counselor, each student gets to explore
individually what their interest and potential are for further study and
career growth. Studentare also enabled to seek mentorship/internship

opportunities via the Guest Speaker Series of through EduLift's own
network pool.

Exposure: By conducting weekly Speaker series and participating in


field visits, student get in direct touch with the people involved and the
industry. Also, managing events show ever small, largely enhances
peoples skills such as communication and network skills. Such
opportunities not only expose student to distinguished people and sectors
of our community but also give them a platform to create their own
exposure to the community.

At Edulift, Trainee had a class regarding social work for the Explore After
SLC course.
Social work as a profession & Social work as a career !
Based on this main motif, two of our Edulift interns; Vharat &Nhurbu
presented their field of study and the possibilities the "Explore After SLC"
students might look up for in the sector of Social Work.

Learning
Trainee learn to explore self understanding

The best and innermost core of the internship is to learn and explore
many more for betterment of individual. Trainee learn the following
1. Communication skill
Trainee had a good learning about good communication. It is the
most important tools to have or posses with every individual trainee
for the betterment and have good adjustment.
So, mostly trainee learn to posses effective communication for well .

2. Know more about agency, organization


Trainee got good chance to learn and know more about the
formation of organization, why organization are established and
many more. Trainee had a good learning about the organization.

3. Explore
Individual counselling at Edulift students oriented to its core. Trainee
will produce an individual action plan .Trainee learn to explore and
expose for the more learning for betterment of own.

4. Collaboration
Trainee learn to collaborate with the different members and the
different organization.

Trainee develop and learn to have the confident while performing
any task. Confident is the another most important tools to deal with
every things.

Theoretical Application and analysis
Principles of social work
As the principles of social work has been very useful to the social worker
for following the activities systematically, many principle of social work
has been applied by the trainee during inside and outside the
organization, during observation and associated with the organization.
1. Acceptance
The trainee had not hesitated during the course of field placement.
Trainee need to appreciate the task and work given by the member
of the organization. And must engaged in every activities and
program carried out by the organization.

2. Principle of non-judgemental attitude


The trainee had support in many program carried out by the
organization using his skills, creativity, understanding etc. Trainee
had to appreciate every children and deal with them.

3. Principle of co-operation
The very most important principle that had applied during the
observation ,trainee must have good understanding and supportive
to the children for the development of their skills

4. Principle of effective communication


Trainee must have effective communication to know and to deal
with the problems of students. To have effective communication
,trainee need to have good communication skill, understanding
capability.

5. Principle of Individualization
Though most of the students are from different cultural background than
trainee .students are from Tibetan community. So every students are

unique and different than trainee because they are from different cultural
background.

Tools and Technique


Different problems arise during the observation, studying about the case
of the client and to deal with it. So following are the tools and technique
used by trainee during his period of involving with the organization.
1. Interview
Individual counselling at the Edulift is student oriented to its core. So
during counselling section, trainee need to have good conversation
with students about their plans, decision, made by them for their up
coming classand program. Need to build up them psychologically
strong along with their ability.

2. Observation
Trainee observe various portion and parts of the organization .
Trainee deal with the administrative work along with classroom
activities. So firstly, trainee had to observe every thing before
performing the task. So observation is the moat important thing to
have before you start or begin any task.

3. Questionnaires
Firstly, before engaging to the EduLift, it is better to have good
understanding and ask them about their interest and hobby.
Counselling section is the most important part to deal and know
more and know more .

4. Recording
Recording is another basic component and tools to deal and source
which work as evidence and proof for the up coming session. So,
even trainee record every single observation which is carried out.

SWOT analysis of the organization
Strength
The main strength of the organization is that : it is the only one
organization which work with the top down approach to education of the
Nepal for the skill development of the students.

Weakness
Absence of learning by doing
Absence of the perfect syllabus for teaching
Lack of the other organization which deals with the education system

A top down approach to education.

Trainee had to work with the Tibetan people who are engaged to unite

Strength
Trainee had a good learning about the culture of the Himalayan
background.
Trainee had good learning about the language related with the students
and member of the organization.

Weakness
Trainee couldnt communicate well. So it was the greatest weakness of the
trainee to deal with the students and the member of the organization.
So being at this organization, It help a lot for me to develop my
communication skill along with the confident to expose something.

Opportunities
Trainee had a good opportunity to learn more about technology,
environment, counselling and Entrepreneur .Trainee got opportunity to
work as a facilitator, who engage with other organization too.

Threat
Trainee had least knowledge and idea of many administrative work
regarding social organization.

Recommendation to Organization
Edulift itself is a good non-profit unique platform where it focus from
teaching to learning , experimental based educations at its heart. So
EduLift is only the single organization working for the betterment of
education system or curriculum activities .so for the betterment may it be
associated with every organization which works for the better of children
as well as To be linked with Education Board of Ministry. Mainly it focus

Recommendation to college
The main way or channel to be associated or deal with field placement of
the trainee is on the hand of college department. So better have good
relation with various organization and most have well learning what the
organization is dealing with. So before dealing with field placement ,better
would college have good relationship and linked with the organization.

Recommendation to trainee
Trainee is the starting phase or basic level or learning about the subject.
So for every individual trainee have good observation before performing
any work . Trainee must observe and learn more about its requirement.

CONCLUSION

Social work as career and social work as profession is the main motif
with which trainee begin the field work and activities are carried out.
At being at Edulift Academy, it help me a lot and it provide me a good
platform to explore and expose my knowledge,understanding,ideas,skills ,
creativity etc. along with development of self professional learning.
This kind of field work placement would help trainee in lot activitiessuch
opportunities not only expose students to distinguished people and sector
of our community but also give them a platform to create their own
exposure to the community along with development of their abilities.
