End of Season Edition 09/10
Mikecityw Finish as
Champions
This year’s Premier League season
came to a close on 9th May and with
it, the Cheadle Champs winner was
crowned. Despite, a strong challenge
from Dad’s Dudes, managed by Chris
Walsh, in the final few weeks of the
season, Mikecityw were able to hang
on to the top spot, eventually taking
the title comfortably.
The season started with magsmen,
managed by Margaret Dolan, taking
an early lead. Having dominated the
top of the league for several weeks,
other managers became suspicious
that someone else was in charge of
the team. This claim was looked into
and was found to be of no substance
whatsoever. Unfortunately, the good
run of form wasn’t sustained and
reigning champion Amanda
Colclough embarked on a climb to
the top of the table, where she was
able to hang around in the top 6 for

the remainder of the season.
After a very poor start to the season,
both Katie and Chris Walsh were able
to turn their fortunes around and
quickly climbed the table. Chris Walsh
fared slightly better and spent a good
number of weeks at the head of the
league. By this point, Mike Walsh had
become concerned by the strength of
his rival’s team; in order to upset the
momentum, he sent a sneaky text
message telling Dad’s Dudes they
would ‘bottle it’. This plan seemed to
work as it wasn’t long before
Mikecityw were back at the top and
building a substantial points lead
week after week. The winning margin
finally ended up at 72 points.
Former champions Nick Pimlott and
Simon Walsh both had disappointing
seasons, finishing 14th and 17th
respectively.

Key Dates
The 2009/10 Fantasy Premier
League season was certainly the most
competitive yet with many new
managers joining the race for the
title. This was reflected in the fact
that this year’s winning points total
was 2332; 330 points more than last
years’, which would only have been
good enough for 8th place this season.
Finally, a big congratulations goes to
Mike Walsh for steering his team to
their first ever league title. Let’s see if
he can also become the first manager
to retain the trophy.

Manager of the Season
As was the case last season, this
year’s Manager of the Season was
voted for by the Cheadle Champs
managers. Emails, facebook messages
and league forum messages were sent
out asking all managers to cast their
votes by Friday 11th June. A total of 10
votes were made and I can now reveal
that the 2008/09 Cheadle Champs
Manager of the Season is … Mike
Walsh! … (senior).
Some might argue that this was the
Cheadle Champs Cup
It was suggested last season that we
should have our very own knockout
competition, and so the Cheadle
Champs Cup was formed. It has been a
fantastic addition to the season and
has created real excitement, and a fair
bit of tension, amongst the managers.
There was an initial qualifying round to
cut the teams down to a total of 32.
Unfortunately, Lloyd Dempsey, Daniel
Harris, Kath and Conor Walsh did not
score enough points to make it through
to the first round proper.
In keeping with the usual cup format, a
draw took place before each round.
The Cheadle Champs balls were taken
away to Dubai and Tenerife and
footage of the draws were posted
online. For anybody that hasn’t yet
seen them, they are well worth a
watch.
There were some interesting ties

obvious choice for the award as Mike
led his team to the league title.
However, the award recognises not
only this fantastic achievement but also
the fact that his team made it to the
Cheadle Champs final and narrowly
missed out on a historic double in what
was a nail-biting final day.
Mike Walsh wasn’t the only person
who was voted for by the other
managers as this season’s Manager of
throughout the competition, in
particular those involving family
members; such as Gemma Walsh v
Jude Walsh and then Katie Walsh,
James Bishop v Margaret Dolan and
Mike Walsh v Katie Walsh.
After the many weeks of preliminary
round, we were left with a Mike Walsh
v Mike Walsh final, which took place
on the final day of the 2009/10
season. With the teams having eight
of the same players, it was always
going to be a very close match, but
few would have expected it to be just
as tight as it was.
Although both teams included Drogba
and Lampard, each team had the
other as captain so it looked like the
choice of captain would be crucial. As
it turned out, they both scored equal
points and so the captain’s double
points were irrelevant. After a topsy-

turvey afternoon, Mike Walsh (s)
thought he had just edged the final
to take the trophy but there was a
one final twist.
Unbeknown to us, Drogba had been
booked in the final minute of the
game, deducting one point (or 2 as
captain) from the overall gameweek
total. This was just enough to tip the
balance in favour of the younger
Mike Walsh who eventually won by
one point; 85 to 84 points. Mike will
be the first winner of the new
Cheadle Champs Cup.
Feature Interview
The overall winner of the premier
league’s fantasy game was Jon
Reeson, a West Ham fan from
England. Although he only scored
300 more points than our champion
Mike Walsh, that amounted to
almost 11,000 league places. Having
remained at the top for a total of 11
weeks, it seems he is the ultimate
master of premier league fantasy
football. He has been kind enough
to share some of his secrets on how
to achieve fantasy football success.

your overall score? Who were the
ones you placed your faith in the

Jon: Yes, thank you Frank
Lampard! He was first choice
captain and an ever present in the
team. He seems to be worth
whatever value the FPL give him
and every season he delivers a
massive points haul. Otherwise the
usual suspects did well for me
when I brought them in like
Rooney, Drogba, Tevez, Milner,
Malouda, etc
Are there any tactics you stuck to
throughout the season? How
successful were your initial
choices, in light of how the season
went?
Jon: 1. Cheap keepers 2. Cheap
defenders. 3. If in doubt, captain
Frank.
Lampard, Drogba, Rooney,
Sorensen all started GW1 and
stayed there most of the season
and did well, no surprises there
really. In the early part of the
season I would transfer in the form
players quickly, maybe on the
Monday, so when they rose in
value that week your total team
value increased. In the latter stages
of the season, I would wait, so I
could avoid bringing in a player
who might not be fit, I was less
worried about the cost of the
player rising.
With regards to defences, your
decision to stick by cheap
defenders was much-talked about;
were you ever tempted to bring in
the big guns or was this a tactic
you were determined to continue
regardless? Also on defences, are
you a fan of “doubling up” or were
you spreading the risk most
weeks?
Jon: I have always sworn by the
idea of having the cheapest
defenders possible and rotating
them so you’d try and play them at
home or against weaker teams to
give them a chance. Craddock,
Caldwell, Dann, etc all did well for
me this year. That said, I did start
off with Ashley Cole for a few
weeks and finished with Bale and
Baines. So you need to be flexible
with your strategy. But I wouldn’t
have 2 defenders on the same
team, too risky for me.

You didn’t take more than a four
point hit throughout the season.
Have you always been conservative
when it comes to points hits, or has
it been a lesson learned over your
years of playing FPL?
Jon: It just doesn’t seem to stack up
to make more than 2 transfers.
You’re asking a lot of your
transferred in players to make up the
8 point deficit. So I try and plan in
advance so I don’t need to take such
a big hit.

These are just a few pointers to
think about for next season.
Although they seem very much like
common sense, it is having those
good basic foundations, and a bit of
luck, which will inevitably create a
successful team.

World Cup 2010
The 2010 FIFA World Cup starts on 11th June. President of FIFA, Sepp
Blatter has said “This World Cup will be marvellous and we are looking
forward to the kick-off...This will be a fantastic World Cup.” “Everywhere,
one can feel ... that this World Cup is very special, the first on African soil,”

It is true to say that there is an incredible amount of anticipation ahead of

this year’s competition. England are seen as one of the favourites to be
overall winners this time around but they will face tough opposition with
the likes of Spain, Brazil and defending champions Italy all with the same
aim.

The tournament kicked-off with a concert on Thursday evening, watched

by over 500 million people worldwide. Stars such as Alicia Keys, Shakira
and Black Eyed Peas performed in front of a 30,000 strong crowd. This was
then followed by a spectacular and vibrant opening ceremony at
Johannesburg’s Soccer City. There will now be 30 days of fantastic football action,
culminating in the final on Sunday 11th July.

McDonalds have teamed up with FIFA to create a fantasy World Cup competition. The
format is very similar to the traditional game. You must select 3 goalkeepers, 7
defenders, 8 midfielders and 5 strikers with a budget of £140million.

Although the competition has started, it is not too late to create a team and join the
Cheadle Champs World Cup League. There are no prizes for the winner of the league, it
is just for fun, but there is Cheadle Champs pride at stake.

Next Season...
The 2010/11 Premier League
season starts on Saturday August
14th 2009; which means there is
plenty of time for fantasy
managers to be planning their
squads, ready for the first
gameweek. You can be sure that
professional football managers will
be using the world cup to scout for
potential star buys for next season
and so fantasy managers should
be taking advantage of the same
opportunity. Many current
Premier League players, such as
Rooney, Fabregas, Torres and
Drogba are involved in the World
Ones to Watch: Adam Johnson
Cup in South Africa,
meaning it is also
important to keep up to
date with the latest
injury and form news. Ben Foster
There are also the many pre- Jermaine
season club tournaments, such Beckford
as the Emirates Cup and the Nikola Zigic

give managers the opportunity
to scout the potential team
starting line-ups ready for that
all important first Premier

Next season is sure to be another
fascinating campaign as there are
five past Champions who will be
looking to regain their crown and
become the first ever manager to
win the league twice. As with this
season, I will send emails and
facebook messages to all members
of the Cheadle Champs group during
the summer, informing current
managers of the start of the season.
Any new managers may also create
their teams at this point and June 11th 2010 World Cup Starts

And finally … Mystic Nick???

In the 2006/07 season, Nick Pimlott named his team Sven4City!! and that summer
Sven was indeed appointed Manchester City manager following the departure of
Stuart Pearce. This season, Nick named his team Sparky 4thechop! And in December,
following a run of 7 straight draws Mark Hughes was sacked and Roberto Mancini
took over. Who knows what will be predicted for next season…
