Chapter 1
Functional Description
This function, which is applicable to the situation of uneven load and fast change between
each carrier in multi-carrier instance, can increases utilization of power amplifier and
increase downlink capacity.
The principle of multi-carrier dynamic power sharing is described as follows. In dual-carrier
WCDMA system, the cell serving R99 has some remaining carrier power which will be
applied to HSDPA scheduling in another carrier. In this instance, the cell throughput of
another carrier will be increased to improve the system capacity. Power shared ratio can
be configured by OMC.

Multi-carrier dynamic power sharing includes two scenarios:

l Scene a: R99+ (R99+DPA). In this instance, the DPA cells can use the remaining
sharing power from R99 cell;
l Scene b: (R99+DPA) + (R99+DPA). In this instance, the DPA cells can use the
remaining sharing power with each other.
In order to implement the sharing between each scheduler, the logic entity of the super
DPA scheduler which is independent of the present DPA scheduler to distribute the sharing
power will be introduced. Node B will notify the maximum transmitting power of the local
cell and the local cell group, and the relationship between the local cell and the local cell
group to RNC by auditing response. According to the acquired information and Node B
measurement information, RNC will execute the power admission control to Node B.

Additionally, the power configuration principle of three-carrier power sharing is described

in the followings:
l Keep identical with dual-carrier power configuration algorithm, namely the scheduler
reports -1,0,1 respectively and the super scheduler distributes the power according to
the report.
l During the distribution, the sum of three carriers power keeps unchanged. Any
distribution will always make the sum of three carriers power equal to the initial value.
l The power distribution principle is the same as the one of dual-carrier. The big step
of step_1 (1w) extracted by the carrier that reports -1 and the small step of step _2
(0.5w) extracted by the carrier that reports 0 will be used for the carrier that reports 1.

Dynamic power sharing in multi-carrier function will be supported with upgrading software
of Node B. The advantage of this technique is to improve utilization rate of output power
in multi carriers and improve quality of user service, increase downlink capacity, and
decrease TCO(Total Cost of Owernship).

Traditional power sharing in multi-carrier is static, power of each carrier is the same. For
example, show as in figure 5. In practical field application, power of multi-carrier can not be

totally used. Load threshold of R99 is low, power of R99 is surplus most of the time. After
introducing HSDPA, HSDPA scheduler can adopt strategy of dynamic power allocation,
total output power of cell can keep a smooth level, and interference of downlink is more
stable, so load threshold of HSDPA can be higher, show as Figure 1-1.

Figure 1-1 Static power sharing in Multi-carrier

Figure 1-2 Downlink power after introducing HSDPA

For example, carrier1 is R99 service carrier, carrier2 is R99+HSDPA service carrier, total
output power of equipment is Pmax, Pmax-carrier1 and Pmax-carrier2 are max power
for each carrier . Pth is the power which can be shared between carriers, Pth=k* min(
Pmax-carrier1,Pmax-carrier2), k is sharing power ratio which can be configured in OMM ,
such as 10% or 20%.
Then take an actual instance for example, each carrier of UMTS Node B is 20W. At time
T, output power of carrier1 is 9W, output power of carrier2 is 17W, but carrier2 need
more 4W for HSDPA service, and based on dynamic power sharing in multi-carrier, 1W(
17+4-20=1W) of carrier1 can share with carrier2 to satisfy HSDPA service requirement,
and capacity of network is also enhanced.

4.1 Test Puropose

The purpose of this test case is to verify the power can be shared between 2 cells.

4.2 Steps for Test

Steps
1. UE1 activates PS UL384K/DL384K call in Cell1 and starts FTP downloading. Make
sure there is no other UE camped on cell1, so enough power can be shared by cell2.

2. UE2 camps on Cell2, and activates a PS UL64K/DL2048K call in Cell2 and starts FTP
downloading.

Lower the signal of cell2 to increase the TCP of cell2, until cell2 share the TCP of cell1.

3. During the process, keep monitoring the cell2 Tx power on EPMS. We can see the Tx
power of cell2 is more than maximum transmission power of cell240dbm.
