As a business that works with the community, we have two sides of the
business - Profit side and voluntary side
We are community focused through the use public consultations
amongst other techniques (participatory design)
Specialise in buildings with low embodied energy (meaning no energy has
gone into making it) eg. Mud bricks, earth walls, straw bales
Low Embodied Energy material eg. Timber (needs only a little bit of
energy to get it into a condition that you can use). To ensure the timber
is a low embodied energy material, it needs to be fsc certified (forestry
stewardship council)
A focus upon using recycled, reused and local materials
Research into recycled materials available eg. Concrete and reusing MF
tyres and bottles
What is the amount of plastic that goes into landfill? MF
Limecrete A porous material meaning it can breathe and allow
moisture to escape
Green walls / roofs helping to integrate designs into the landscape
Look into Hill Holt Wood
Education sector within the company getting both students and the
community involved in the construction process
Hockerton Housing Project in Nottinghamshire is a community business
and self-sufficient co-housing development. They are a non-profit co-
operative (meaning they all own a piece of it eg. a communal space).
They engage the community by hosting energy talks, generating
renewable energy and designing eco homes. The homes are dug into the
side of the earth creating earth sheltered homes.
Can also do work for charities in particular
Creating spaces for the Homeless or engaging them in the construction
look at framework for homeless people in Nottingham as the number of
homeless people has gone up
