CHAPTER I

1.1 Background
Vocabulary is very important in learning English. Vocabulary is

one forming sentences, which can later be used to interact with the

people of other countries. Whether it's in the form of messages,

articles, magazines and others. One of the goals of teaching English as

a foreign language for the Indonesian people is that they can read,

understand ideas and understand books written in English. To achieve

this goal, students must master a lot of vocabulary. Without

vocabulary we can not master the language, because the vocabulary is

the basis of language. This means that the vocabulary is one of the key

that must be mastered by students if they want to have a good

knowledge in the four skills, including reading skills.


Vocabulary is one of the important aspects in learning a foreign

language. Anyone would have difficulty in understanding speech,

reading, listening, and writing when they have limited or lack of

vocabulary. It may not be possible to learn a foreign language without

the vocabulary. The less vocab they master, the more difficult to follow

English lessons.
Nation (2001) further describes the relationship between vocabulary

knowledge and language use as complementary: knowledge of vocabulary enables

language use and, conversely, language use leads to an increase in vocabulary

knowledge. The importance of vocabulary is demonstrated daily in and out the

school. In classroom, the achieving students possess the most sufficient


vocabulary. In English as a second language (ESL) and English as a foreign

language (EFL) learning vocabulary items plays a vital role in all language skills

(i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation,2011).


In the process of learning, motivation is necessary, because a person who

does not have the motivation to learn, not be possible learning activities.

Motivation can determine whether or not in achieving the goal, so the greater the

motivation will be even greater learning success. In this case the teacher in the

school should be looking for ways to how students can be motivated to learn

English, with English extracurricular and activities can help students' motivation

in learning English. Their English competition also gave more motivation for

students to learn.
SMP Plus Melati selected as a subject in this research. Researchers chose

the eighth grade as a population. vocabulary became one of the problems in

English. Students at the school come from various regions in East Kalimantan. So

the knowledge they are different from one another. In addition to the full schedule

of activities is also an issue at the school. Choosing a teaching technique that is

fast, accurate and understandable to students is very suitable for SMP Plus Melati.

The above problem is the main reason researchers to make the school as a

research subject.
From the statements above, the researcher could take conclusion that

vocabulary has actually an important role in able to mastered English language.

So, the first thing that students of SMP Plus Melati Samarinda should learn is

some of words vocabulary. The more they learn and memorize some stock of

words, the more they get easy in their communication.


Furthermore, the researcher would like to know and investigate whether

there is significant correlation between students motivation and vocabulary

achievement.

1.2 Research Question


1. How is the correlation between students motivation and vocabulary

achievement?

2. Is there any correlational between students motivation and vocabulary

achievement.?

1.3 Purpose of The Study

According to the research question, there are pupose of the study :

1. To know the correlation between students motivation and vocabulary

achievement..

2. To know is there any significanct correlational between students motivation

and vocabulary achievement.

1.4 The Hypotehsis

1. Null Hypothesis

There is no significant correlational between students motivation and

vocabulary achievement. of eight grade student of SMP.

2. Alternative Hypothesis

There is a significant correlational between students motivation and

vocabulary achievement.of eight grade student of SMP.


1.5 Significant of Study

This Study is expected to provide the result which is useful for the

educational progress. The significant of the study are as follows:

1. Theoretical Aspect

The findings of this study can provide information about the

correlational between students motivation and vocabulary achievement

2. Practical Aspect

Findings of this study is to be feedback to teachers and students. If

there is correlational between students motivation and vocabulary

achievement.

1.6 Scope And Limitation Of Study

The researcher limited study as follows :

1. The study focuses on the correlational between students motivation and

vocabulary achievement.

2. The population of this study is the eight grade student of SMP

3. There is only one group of this study
