Social Action Production Proposal

Name of production

Food Bank Importance

Reason for following this issue

The reason why we decided to follow this issue with food banks is
because, it hasnt been well aware in the past and especially in a
positive way. It can also cause some controversial issues with the
government, because some members think that there is no need for
anything like this. By producing a social action video on this issue,
people will be able to see the positivity that it spreads and gives the
charity to be promoted and more known in the community.
Length of production

10 minutes minimum
Interviewees in production

Members of the charity

Staff of the food banks
People using the facilities
People in the local area
Production angle, how and why

The social action video will plan and aim to be of informative, giving
audiences that will be watching information along with figures of the
charity. It will also try to convince the audience by making them
emotionally infused, with the social action video showing the pain the
people go through, that are affected by the negatives of the issue.
A production layout (beginning, middle and end)

Opening: the social action video will begin with some factual information about
food banks, how many food banks there are all over the UK and how the number
of people using food banks has increased and why. This will set the tone e for the
documentary and will give the viewer a bit of understanding about the subject
matter.

Middle: There will be a couple of interviews getting an experts opinion as they

have firsthand experience and knowledge on the subject matter as well as people
who volunteer and communicate with the people who use these facilities. This will
start to pull peoples heartstrings, as it will be more about the independent
struggles people face, which lead them to using food banks as well as breaking
stereotypes of just homeless people using food banks.

End: Then we will conclude the video with a voice over accompanied by charts
with data about food banks and visuals that match the voice over to make people
sympathize with people who might need them and try to make them do
something for the cause.

Target Audience and why

The aimed target audience for the social action video, will be for certain
people in the C1 E socio economic groups. For the amount of
people that live in Slough, it will be for a good local cause and
help the community in lots of ways possible. The production will
also be targeted at separate people are aged between teens to elderly,
because they would be the most likely people to help donate in solving
the issue.
Where your video will be uploaded / shown

The social action video will be uploaded to YouTube. The reason why it will be
uploaded to that certain social media site, is because the video will have easy to
access diversity and has the potential to be distributed to a large audience. It also
makes it easier for the charity to showcase the social action on their professional
website.

Copyright issues / legal ethical issues you may face

We may run into issues regarding copyright when using found footage; it could appear as
if this work was being presented as our own, therefore violating copyright laws. This
would be an issue when uploading the work to YouTube, as the production could
potentially be removed. This can be avoided by captioning the B- Roll with where the
footage was taken from, highlighting to the audience that the work is not ours. Legally,
we could run into issues when filming certain aspects of the foodbank. A large part of the
food banks work relies on anonymity of the users, and most may not be happy to be
seen. Legal action because of this can be avoided by making all participants sign a
waiver to show they are happy to be seen in this production. This stops any legal action
being carried out should an individual not want to be featured in the social action.
Ethically, this production may cause issues in regards to the controversy surrounding the
subject matter. As the social action aims to raise awareness for the food banks, it will be
shown in a mostly positive light. This may be accused of being biased and therefore
unethical. This could be resolved by presenting both sides of the argument, however, this
may defeat the object of the social action.

Production

Before you go off and film please be aware of the following.

PRODUCTION TIPS:

Interview in relevant locations

Make sure there is no background noise when filming - ask to turn off all machines or film
in a quiet location and if outside try and use a wind cover and microphone.

Use TWO cameras when filming - One following the interviewer and one following you as
you had with your multi camera unit

Get MORE footage than you need - you can always cut items out but you can't add once
you have filmed

Think about how you want the final product to look before you start filming

Add archive footage (clips, newspaper clippings, footage from news stories etc...) but
ALWAYS reference them on screen and make sure you have permission to use them
Once filming is finished make sure the following is complete BEFORE you start
to edit your production

B Roll In England it is estimated that 3.7 million children live

in poverty in the U.K, 1.7 of which are living in severe

poverty. In slough alone, 8,000 children live in poverty,

equating to 1 child in 30, the average size of a

classroom.

Medium shot This video aims to look at the resources provided, and how

we as community can help

Medium Long Shot Foodbanks are a non profit, charitable organization, that

relies solely on donations and volunteers, in order to

continue their work

B - Role Foodbanks work by collecting food and toiletries through

donation, and putting together packages, containing

enough food for three days. This allows recipients to get

back on their feet and avoid hunger.

Long Shot However, Foodbanks are a some what

controversial topics, as bids for government

funding have sparked debates in Parliament.

Long Shot In a parliamentary debate, it was debated that use of food

banks is a direct result of the 12 week delay of the

receiving of benefits. This goes on to the larger issue of

the benefit system, and its effectiveness.

Long Shot However, as a community, we can personally strive to

provide help to less fortunate individuals, through

donations or volunteer work. To help our peers and better

the local community.
