Part 1: Unit Summary

Learning Statement
Tell the story of how you made sense of the different concepts throughout this unit. Be sure to hit all of the following talking points, and
include all activities/worksheets that are applicable. Be sure to address a habit of a mathematician and one are you might have grappled
with. You must use artifacts (in class activities and problem sets, notes, class discussions) from this unit as evidence.

Rational Functions ( f (x) = x) I had worked on asymptotes before, so I knew the basics of
the idea. I cant divide by zero, so x-values that would have
me perform that operation dont show up on the graph. In
addition, certain numerators prevent certain y-values from
appearing, such as y=0 for an equation with 1 in the
numerator. For the parent function 1/x, as x gets bigger the
fraction becomes smaller, so it approaches (but never
reaches) 0 as x tends towards infinity.

Evaluating Functions All I have to do to evaluate a function is replace the given
variable with the given number, and use arithmetic to solve
for the equation. For more complicated replacements, I can
distribute when necessary so its simpler.
The Arithmetic of Functions Performing arithmetic on functions is similar to evaluating
functions for variables with arithmetic, such as (x-5). All I
need to do is distribute the functions when necessary, group
like terms, and double-check the order of operations. To
divide functions I need to factor each one and cross out
terms that appear in both the numerator and denominator.
Part 2: Practice Problems for the Test
1. Practice finding asymptotes and y-intercepts

1 1
f (x) = x2 f (x) =
x 2 49

2. Practice Evaluating Functions

Let f (x) = = 2x 1 and g (x) = x 2 1

f (0) f (1) f ( 1) f (a)

g (0) g ( 2) g (3) g (t)

f (a + 5) g (x + h ) g (a 1) g (f (x )
f (x+h) f (x)
Honors Challenge: If f (x) = 3x 5, find h

3. Practice Arithmetic of Functions

If f (x) = 4x 2 + 3x + 2 and g (x) = 2x 2 5x + 2 find f + g , f g , f g, and f /g
