Lord of the Flies: Chapter Eleven and Twelve

Notes
As you read chapters eleven and twelve of Lord of the Flies, take notes by adding details to the spaces below. Once
you are finished taking notes, respond to the discussion question and identify 5 or more vocabulary words you have
learned in these chapters. Refer back to our chapter 11-12 Quizlet study set as needed.

I. Chapter 11 discussion questions:

A. What is myopia? What makes Piggy myopic? Are there other myopic characters
(figuratively speaking)? Discuss the significance of blindness (literal and figurative) in this chapter.
Myopia is nearsightedness and piggy wants his glasses back because Jack broke them and stole them. Piggy
needed glasses because he needed to see I myself have glasses and is also nearsighted and know how it feels
to lose my glasses and not be able to see clearly.

B. What happens to Samneric in this chapter? Why do you think they chose Samneric?
What do Samneric want to do to protect themselves from this fate, before they even leave for Jacks
camp?
Sam and Eric get tied up with rope. I think that they were the chosen people to get tied up because they were
younger and weaker and unable to defend themselves when getting tied up.

C. What do Jack and Ralph do after Ralph calls Jack a thief? Who advises them to stop?
What do they do after he orders Samneric to be tied up?
Jack and Ralph get into a fight and ends up getting so intense they begin to charge at each other like bulls.
Piggy wants to say something and stops the fight just because he has the conch which almost has no
meaning at this point.

D. What is the significance of Piggys injury in this chapter? Is Piggy a static or dynamic character?
How do you know?
Piggys death was important because Ralph and Piggy were the only two logical people left and alive to
speak the truth and be wise. This mattered because now that Piggy died Ralph is all alone to die.

II. Chapter 12 discussion questions:

A. When Ralph comes upon the Lord of the Flies in the jungle, what does he do? What
is the significance of this action?
He destroys the pig skull also known as The Lord of the Flies which was originally meant to scare away
the beast, even though we know that the beast does not exist now. He was angry that now he knew he was
basically all alone and Piggy died so that is one reason he destroyed the pig skull.

B. How do SamnEric offer support to Ralph when he finds them guarding the gates on
Castle Rock?
Sam and Eric give Ralph a warning that he is going to be hunted. The twins help Ralph when Ralph sneaks
up to there base and the twins give him meat and tell him that he is going to be hunted and killed.

C. What can you infer Roger and Jack intend to do with the stick that is sharpened at both
ends?
I can infer that Jack is planning to hunt down and kill Ralph with a spear. Maybe they are going to kill the
twins and put each twin on each end and maybe be cannibals and eat them because of their strong act of
savagery.

D. Near the end of the book, it says, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of
man's heart, and the fall through the air of a true, wise friend called Piggy. What do you think this
quote means? Think of Ralph's perspective, how did he change, what did he learn? Was he friends with
Piggy at the beginning?
What I think that quote means is that Ralph came to more of a civilized manner, more than he already was
and realized that Piggy was at the end his true best friend. He was also probably relieved that he saw a
grown-up officer and knew that he would be saved and not killed. I do believe that Ralph was friends with
Piggy in the beginning of the story because even though he made fun of his name he still felt bad for him
and respected him .
