Re: Critical Thinking Memorandum

This memo is being sent to discuss critical thinking. We will define critical

thinking and share the benefits gained while utilizing critical thinking. A personal

example providing a situation in which critical thinking was used will be addressed and

the importance and benefits critical thinking had in analyzing and concluding the

aforementioned situation. Additionally, potential uses and applications of critical

thinking in my current career will be developed and discussed

Critical thinking is the application of reason to achieve a sound and

accurate conclusion. In order to successfully think critically, one must strive to possess a

series of abilities and strengthen these abilities to strengthen ones own ability to reason.

The ability to reason inductively and deductively will allow a critical thinker to support

and defend their premise. By utilizing inductive reasoning a conclusion can be supported

analyzing the accuracies of the premise. Utilizing deductive reasoning will help to

demonstrate the accuracy of premise to prove the conclusion to be true. Additionally,

strengthening the ability to distinguish the difference between pertinent information and

information that is not pertinent will enhance the ability to critically think. (Moore &

Parker, 2015)

There are many benefits to critical thinking. When applying critical thinking

decisions can be made using logic to identify flaws in an argument to better formulate a

reasonable and accurate conclusion. Successful critical thinking can help to eliminate

errors in decision making through analysis of supporting data and recognizing and

determining whether data is fact or opinion.

In an effort to build a strong workforce with a wide range of expertise I was asked

to read resumes and interview potential candidates for a position my team was looking to

fill. During the resume analyzing process I had to decide which candidates had the

expertise my team needed to be more successful while also determining whether the

potential candidate would blend well with the team. For each resume I utilized critical

thinking to determine whether to interview or not interview. Simply put each resume I

had to satisfy a small list of objectives. Objective one; we need a person who has

expertise with pneumatic controls. Objective two; we need a person who has strong

customer service skills. Objective three; the suitable candidate will be willing to learn

and train in the areas they lack experience and knowledge. I used critical thinking to

form my premise and the information on the resume to come to a conclusion. If a resume

made it through each objective with a yes the candidate was contacted for an interview.

The use of critical thinking allowed me to successfully determine appropriate

candidates by evaluating their strengths. Analysis of their descriptions helped me to

determine how knowledgeable they were in the fields their resume claimed them to be. I

was able to conclude which candidates had expertise in specified fields by separating

terms and descriptive sentences that helped support the claim they had the desired skills.

The use of critical thinking afforded me the comfort that I successfully eliminated and

accepted candidates based on the information I had at my disposal.

I will continue to pursue strengthening my critical thinking in my current role.

Critical thinking will be imperative in analyzing mechanical systems and developing

sequences of operation in order to utilize programming to ensure I am successful at

controlling their processes effectively and most efficiently. Utilizing the data provided by

mechanical equipment, decisions on control strategies can be made and implemented.

Sequence of operations can be developed for energy efficiency using the supporting

information. Arguments can be supported on strategies to implement based on energy,

control, and optimization of each mechanical system.
