This five-branch silver

candelabrum was presented to
Sir Charles Cowper (1807–75)
by the Sydney Railway
Company in recognition of his
contribution to building the first
railway in NSW from Sydney to
Parramatta. As chairman of the
company, Cowper worked
tirelessly to overcome labour
and financial difficulties,
eventually convincing the
government to take over the
line which opened in 1855. In
1869 the line was extended to
Goulburn, to the satisfaction of
the graziers and merchants
there who had been key
lobbbyists for the railway and
among the first shareholders in
the company.
The candelabrum was made in
the workshop of Robert
Garrard II, one of London’s
foremost silversmiths. It was
part of a six-piece silver set
valued at £662 12s, a
substantial sum in the mid
1800s. This piece was
purchased at auction by the
Museum in 2003 and will go on
display in July this year as part
of the revamped Locomotive
No 1 exhibition.
