Solving Poverty

One child in poverty dies every four seconds. This is equivalent to fourteen children

dying every minute and around 21,000 children dying every day (Shah Causes of Poverty). Over

half of the world's population lives in poverty, and poverty is a large issue for the society to

solve. Our community should come together to donate and help families in poverty reach a better

life because it is not fair that some people are living in worse conditions than others. Families in

poverty deserve to get help, more specifically, a place to sleep and live with little cost. Children

in poverty need an education. Our community should come together to help these families by

homemaking simple necessities for them. In most situations, people in poverty will ask for

money along the streets, in hopes to earn enough for a warm meal. Most people in our

community, however, would walk past a homeless man, woman, child, or family, and not donate

a simple dollar or a couple cents to help them out. We could also give families help to start over

and hope that they are able, no matter their condition, to construct a new life for themselves. Our

community needs to unite to help those who are not living their best life by providing them with

life necessities like food and shelter that should be freely available to them.

Poverty is a tremendously important issue in todays society. Almost half of the world-

about three billion people- live in poverty, and survive on less than $2.50 a day (Anup Shah).
Wannenmacher- 2

They suffer from hunger and weather conditions. Not only that, more than one billion out of the

three billion in poverty, live in extreme poverty and spend less than $1.25 a day, struggling to

survive. People sleeping in the streets with nothing but one blanket, need attention. Put yourself

in their shoes, having little to no energy to walk around and find people that would help, the

homeless usually stay in one spot asking for money or help from those walking by. Even with a

can in front of them hoping to collect the smallest amount of change, most people would

probably just walk by without donating. Next time you spot a homeless person on the sidewalk,

think about giving up a dollar or two, for those who aren't as fortunate as you. For these reasons,

our community should come together to make soaps, knit socks, blankets, and beanies to help

them. Additionally, children in poverty aren't educated, and most likely can not read or write.

Education is important in today's society, and many kids aren't receiving it. This results in a large

population of homeless children not going to college either because of the costs, or because of

not having been educated earlier. This is not right, to have children not getting properly educated

because of their condition, and having so many families in poverty when they deserve something

more.

Children and families living in poverty need help, so they can live a substantial life and

help our economy and society grow as a whole. The homeless families need something more and

I believe our community can help provide that. Whether it is giving children simple books to

help them get educated, or providing families with necessities such as blankets and socks to help

keep warm, everything makes a difference. People who are homeless are most often unable to

acquire and maintain regular, safe, and adequate housing or shelter. In addition, they cant find

the energy and tools to take care of themselves so they are most likely not in the best condition.
Wannenmacher- 3

Although I mention that families need help, their children also need attention. When on the

streets, children especially don't receive attention and care like they should, mostly getting

shamed and shunned out as people walk by because of their age and condition. Homeless

families with young children are also most likely worse off because they have to care for a larger

amount of people, and that can get more expensive. In addition, some homeless families care for

the parents more than the kids, leaving their kids in worse conditions. One in three children in

poverty are living without a substantial shelter, and one in five children in poverty have no

access to safe drinking water (Anup Shah Poverty Facts and Stats 11). For these reasons, kids are

very vulnerable in homeless areas. I mention this because when donating to homeless families,

we should recognize the fact that homeless kids also need aid. Nevertheless, I still believe that

attention should go towards families as well, but we need to recognize the fact that children are

also bad off.

Many contend that donating to people in poverty would be too expensive; or that people

in poverty got themselves in the situation, so they should have to get themselves out of it.

Salon.com states that when you are poor, finding a place to live and getting transportation is hard

(Dave Johnson). However, once poor people find a job, they will be able to earn enough money

to start living a substantial life. Later on, they will eventually earn enough money to find a home.

In addition, giving poverty families hope, and making beanies, socks, blankets, and soap for

them comes at little cost. While gathering a large group of people to make these necessities, the

cost would be very little, but the reward would be very large in knowing that the group is helping

others. With homeless people getting jobs, we would have more people employed which would
Wannenmacher- 4

help strengthen our economy and our society would grow because there would be less homeless

people.

Some say that poverty isn't a huge problem in the world and doesn't need to immediately

be solved. They are saying that people who have to live off of less than $1.25 a day aren't

important, as of the moment. Most people dont realize that poverty is the fact that people cant

provide for themselves and they arent able to nourish their trapped selves, causing them to be

stuck inside a monster- poverty. Therefore, I am encouraging people to think about helping those

around them, that are living in worse conditions. Although some people might say that helping

the poor community would be expensive, if a large enough group gathered together with enough

determination, the costs won't be much. For these reasons, helping those in poverty is worth a

try.
