SHEET (2): Fluid Dynamics: Continuity, Bernoulli and
Energy Equations

1) Section (1) has a flow rate of 0.08 m3/s. Section

(2) has a diameter of 8 cm and the flow velocity
is 11 m/s. Section (3) has a diameter of 5 cm.
Compute the flow velocity and flow rate at
section (3). Is the flow at section (3) in or out?.

The pipe flow fills a cylindrical surge tank as

shown. At time (t 0), the tank is completely
empty. Estimate the time required to completely
fill the tank.

Kerosene flows into the 1.2 m diameter

cylindrical tank through pipes A and B, at 0.9
m/s and 0.6 m/s, respectively. It exists at C at
a constant rate of 0.3 m/s. Determine the time
required to fill the tank if y = 0 when t = 0.

2) Water flows through the horizontal branching pipe shown in figure at

a rate of 0.28 m3/s. If viscous effects are negligible, determine the

water speed at section (2), the pressure at section (3), and the flow
rate at section (4).

0.5 m

3) The siphon shown in

figure is filled with
water and
discharging at 150 L/s. Find the losses
from point 1 to 3. Find the pressure
at point 2 if 2/3 of the losses occur
between points 1 and 2.

Determine the air pressure that must be exerted

at the top of the kerosene in the large tank at B
so that the initial discharge through the drain
pipe at A is 0.1 m3/s once the valve at A is
opened. ( Kerosene= 814 kg/m3).

Water flows steadily from a large tank and exits
through a vertical, constant diameter pipe as shown in
figure. The air in the tank is pressurized to 50 kN/m2.
Neglecting friction loss, determine: (i) the height (h) to
which the water rises, (ii) the water velocity in the pipe, Air
and (iii) the pressure in the horizontal part of the pipe.

4) The losses up to section A are 2

5 v 1 / 2 g and the nozzle losses are
0.05 v 2 /2 g . Determine:
2

a) The discharge and the pressure at A, if H = 8 m.

b) For pressure at A of 25 kPa with the same losses a above,
determine the discharge and the head H.

The flowing fluid is CO 2 at 20C ( 3 kg/m3). If p1 170 kPa and the
manometer fluid is Meriam red oil (SG 0.827), neglecting losses, estimate:
i) The pressure (p2).
ii) The volume flow rate of CO2 in (m3/h).

5) Water is being pumped at a rate of 25 L/s

from a large lake to a reservoir located
above it by 25 m. If the head loss of the
piping system is 7 m, determine the
power required to drive the pump (PShaft)
if its mechanical efficiency 80%.

The pump discharges water at B at 0.05

m3/s. If the friction head loss between the
intake at A and the outlet at B is 0.9 m, and
the power input to the pump is 8 kW,
determine the difference in pressure
between A and B. The efficiency of the
pump is = 70%.

A fireboat is to fight fires at coastal areas by drawing seawater with a density of
1030 kg/m3 through a 20 cm diameter pipe at a velocity of 3 m/s and discharging it
through a nozzle with an exit diameter of 5 cm. The total head loss of the system is 3
m, and the position of the nozzle is 4 m above sea level. For pump efficiency of 70 %,
determine the required shaft power input to the pump.
